Carson City, Quad region COVID-19 Monday briefing: 9 new cases, 9 recoveries

Carson City Health and Human Services is reporting Monday, August 24, 2020 that there are nine new cases and nine recoveries of COVID-19 in the Quad-County region. This brings the total number of cases to 952, with 854 recoveries and fifteen deaths, 83 cases remain active.

Insurance agent with traffic warrants tells CCSO deputy he was speeding to get to restaurant before it closed

A 25-year-old Reno man was arrested Sunday night in the area of Fairview and Roop streets for three failure to appear warrants out of Carson City, a contempt of court warrant out of Reno Township, and for suspicion of reckless driving, speeding more than 35 mph over the limit and driving with a suspended license.

UPDATE 8:40AM: Resources are on scene of a single tree fire in Washoe Valley west of Bowers Mansion. The #BowersFire is a-quarter of an acre in brush and timber and was caused by lightning in the area, according to the U.S. Forest Service. No structures were threatened, fire officials said.

Loyalton Fire update for Friday, August 21: 60 percent contained, almost 50,000 acres have burned

As of 7 a.m. on Friday, Aug. 21, the Loyalton Fire has burned 46,872 and is 60% contained. At least five homes and six outbuildings have been destroyed in the fire. No casualties or injuries have been reported.

Crews worked overnight to find and extinguish heat sources interior to containment lines near Balls Canyon Ranch and along the southern fire perimeter. Priorities today are to continue to strengthen lines, backhaul excess equipment, and identify remaining heat sources.

Special medallion to be minted Saturday in Carson City

Coach 17 is the rail car that was present at Promontory Summit, Utah, in 1869, when the nation’s first transcontinental railroad was completed. It is part of the Nevada State Railroad Museum’s collection.

National Weather Service issues Dense Smoke Advisory for Reno, Carson City region

UPDATE: The National Weather Service in Reno has issued a Dense Smoke Advisory for the greater Reno, Carson City and Carson Valley areas including Sparks, Verdi, Gardnerville and Virginia City. The advisory is in effect until 11 a.m. Thursday. Visibility is below 3 miles with unhealthy air quality for sensitive groups. The advisory says to expect periods of dense smoke and unhealthy air quality through Thursday morning. Winds may help improve air quality into Wednesday night before smoke returns to the area by early Thursday morning.

Central Lyon Fire crews responded Sunday afternoon to brush fires in the Dayton area and one possible in Stagecoach. One fire near the "D" hill behind Dayton High School was reportedly knocked down just after 2 p.m. and firefighters are continuing to work on a fire located on Como Mountain.
