Carson City assesses flood damage, city crews work to resolve closed roads

The Carson City Emergency Operations Center will close its operation at approximately 5 p.m. today. Damage assessment teams will continue their work through the week.
The National Weather Service states that snow is expected later tonight in the Carson City area, with the possibility of periods of heavy snow. We encourage drivers to exercise caution as road conditions can become dangerous.

What Works: Preparedness vs. Complacency

The recent flooding was devastating for some, inconvenient for others. What was the difference? Of course, flood zoning played a large role. But even those in flood areas were better off because of a single mindset, preparedness.
I was personally impressed by the local response.

Carson City courthouse open, Meals on Wheels resumes Tuesday, evacuation shelter to close

The Meals on Wheels program is closed today. Seniors are asked to eat their provided shelf-stable meal. Welfare checks are being made on those seniors who th participate in the program. The Senior Center will open at 9 a.m. on Tuesday and will resume normal operations.

Carson City flood update: Road closures remain as river levels continue to rise

As Carson City wakes to clean streets and soggy backyards, city employees have been hard at work throughout the night and will continue Monday to provide damage assessment, debris removal and clean up.

Temperatures have dropped steadily overnight and the river continues to rise.

What Works: New Year, Now What?

I believe I felt a collective sigh of relief when 2016 left and 2017 made its grand entrance. The new year is filled with so much hope, promise, and delight. Yet, I was disappointed when I opened Facebook the other day and one person stated that 2017 is already proving to be just like 2016 for them.

Column: Walk more, talk less

There's an old idiom that goes, "Walk the talk, don't talk the walk."

Talking sort of comes with the territory for me. I spend most of my time writing words.

But it occurred to me as the holidays approached this year that I wasn't doing much else.

This had to change, I told myself.

ROTC students learn ship construction using cardboard and tape at Carson City pool

Before getting into her cardboard boat in the swimming pool, Nicole Brown, 17, was fairly confident her vessel was sound. “We made a strong keel, and all the weight is in the middle,” she said.

She made it four laps across the pool at the Carson City Aquatic Center before the cardboard became too saturated to function.

Pets get pictures with Santa at Benson's in Carson City

If you haven't asked your pets if they've been good for Christmas, now might be a good time.

Santa Claus will be at Benson's Feed and Tack, located at 2750 Highway 50 East in Carson City, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10 for pictures with your best furry friends.

No Room for Faithless Electors

Ten years from now, you probably won't remember Christopher Suprun.

Suprun was chosen by the Texas Republican Party for the Electoral College. For most of our nation's history, this has been a procedural and honorary duty conferred upon loyal activists within the political parties when their presidential candidate carried their state.

Rock Steady Boxing in Carson City announces first-ever Boxer of the Month

Rock Steady Boxing of Northern Nevada, based out of the Tazmanian Boxing Club in Carson City, has named Gloria Navarro as the program's first ever "Boxer of the Month."

What Works: The most important gift on your list is the one to yourself

There are 19 days until Christmas. The holiday season is in full swing. Trees are going up. Houses are getting decorated. Shopping happens between kids’ activities and holiday family fun. Making sure all the presents are well hidden is a feat within itself! Yet there is one gift that sometimes gets forgotten. That gift is the gift you give to yourself.

What Works: Self-Leadership, power and the Thanksgiving holiday

Thanksgiving is just a few days around the corner and our country is in a ruffle about the election. Yes, I said in a ruffle. Expect some Texanisms in this article as I am visiting where I grew up for Thanksgiving.

The Change Place celebrates grand opening in Carson City

The Change Place in Carson City is no ordinary gym. In fact, it’s not a gym at all, said Don Kuhl, who co-owns the business with his wife, Sherry Newsom.

While there is gym equipment aplenty, aerobics, yoga, meditation, massage therapy, personal training and motivational conversations happen here, too.

Nevada Agencies Participate in Emergency Disaster Exercise

The Nevada National Guard is joining forces with several state and federal agencies for a mock disaster drill. Vigilant Guard '17 is the name of the exercise. It started Thursday, with a mock earthquake in Las Vegas. The magnitude 7.2 was followed up with a magnitude 7.8 in Los Angeles, Monday.

What Works: The Wild Fantasy World of Assumptions

Yesterday, I checked into an AirBnb in downtown El Paso. My lovely friends in San Diego had put me up the night before. We watched a movie called Sicario, a flick about Mexican drug cartels. Needless to say, the movie is partially set in Juarez, the border town right next to El Paso. It was the perfect set up to a nice waterfall of assumption.

Business Spotlight: Change Place opens its doors in Carson City

Change happens.

At the Change Place, part of the Change Companies in Carson City, it’s something that occurs every day.

A Case for Hillary (not…)

Hillary Rodham Clinton's four decades of professional misdeeds, scandals and crimes are well documented throughout the internet. Given that history, WHY would ANYBODY like HER to be the next PRESIDENT?!?!? I can think of two reasons.

1. Ideology.

What Works: Post-Parade Lesson is to Leave No Trace

The principle of Leave No Trace is in use on trails, in the public parks system. It’s also one of the 10 Principles of Burning Man. This weekend, after the Nevada Day festivities, record amounts of trash laced our streets. I can’t ignore this fact. When a person has a voice and an audience, I believe it is their personal responsibility to speak up. So, this week, in a personal and business context, I want to talk about what it means to Leave No Trace.

Three State Ballot Measures We Oppose

Last week we discussed the state ballot measure that would legalize the recreational use of marijuana in Nevada. We have mixed views on that issue, but there are three other important state ballot questions we oppose.

Question 1 would require background checks for almost all gun sales or transfers. That might sound harmless enough or maybe even beneficial to some folks. But it’s quite the opposite.

What Works: Stagnation is putting your life and business in danger

When I think of stagnation, I think of a pond where the water isn’t circulating. The water gets murky. Algae might grow. If water sits stagnant for a while, pets can get sick if they drink from it. Stagnant water is a source of malaria and dengue. It’s serious stuff. Let it sit a long time and it smells like serious stuff, too. This is what happens in our lives if we don’t grow.

What Works: Good boundaries make for good business

I grew up where the handshake deal was gold. If someone said they would do something, they did it. All it took was a handshake and work began. Handshake deals are still pretty common. Unfortunately, plenty can still be misunderstood with a handshake deal.

Carson City emergency crews respond to multi-vehicle crash at Roop near Fairview

UPDATE 8:32PM: Four vehicles were involved in the crash Tuesday afternoon that sent two to the hospital via Care Flight and one via ground ambulance. The vehicles involved were a 2007 Toyota Highlander, a 1996 Ford Windstar, a 2003 Buick Regal and a 1998 Peterbilt commercial truck.

What Works: What I learned about business through paranormal investigating

Inspiration can come from anywhere. Sometimes, business lessons come flying at me faster than I can take notes about them. Ideas are sort of like orbs. Some you can’t see unless you are looking for them. Some people believe in them, some don’t. Yet they are always a topic of discussion. The orbs were flying like crazy at The St. Charles Hotel this past weekend.
