Carson High School Makes Engineering Addition To School

Carson High School officially opened its new, very modern engineering computer lab Friday. The room's previous purpose was the old weight training facility but with the new addition of the wrestling room the logical place to break ground for the new lab was the old weight room.

Pizza Factory extends help Thursday to Eagle Valley Middle School

This Thursday, from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., The Pizza Factory is helping to raise money for the Eagle Valley Middle School Parent Teacher Organization. The generous owners will be donating 20 percent off the entire day's earnings back to our school to help pay for CRT snacks for the entire student body and hopefully buy us some much needed outdoor picnic tables for our students and staff to enjoy during the beautiful weather.

Registration is underway now through Oct. 9 for Carson City Recreation youth volleyball for boys and girls this fall.

This is a great opportunity for children between the grades of 5th and 8th grade to learn the great sport of volleyball. In our 10 week session your child will get to learn all the fundamentals of volleyball, will make lots of new friends, and learn the important values of sportsmanship. The program runs from Oct. 14 to Nov.

Senator Square: Full speed ahead with 2,117 students enrolled at Carson High

Welcome back to the third installment of Senator Square. We had an exciting week at CHS including a video message from our rivals from Douglas High School. Their staff challenged our staff to the ALS Ice Bucket Challenge. More than 50 CHS teachers and staff showed up for the challenge, as we could never let the Tigers out-do us.

Carson City deputies make 23 arrests over holiday weekend

The Carson City Sheriff's Office reports 23 arrests over the holiday weekend period from Friday to Sunday, with a handful being for DUI and drug-related offenses.

Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong says the events this weekend at Mills Park generated a huge turnout, especially among families and by and large there were no major fights or crime-related incidents at the park.

DARE program to graduate more than 500 Carson City area fifth graders

Thursday was DARE graduation day for around 90 Fremont Elementary School students. The drug prevention program, coordinated by Community Prevention Officer Lisa Davis of the Carson City Sheriff's Office, is active in all elementary schools with classes taught to fifth graders.

In all about 550 fifth grades from around Carson City will graduate from the program this spring, said Davis.

Eagle Valley Middle School aide accused of sexual conduct with student

A 28-year-old Eagle Valley Middle School teacher aide was arrested Friday on suspicion of having sexual contact with a student, according to a criminal complaint filed in Carson City Justice Court.

Stephanie Mariskanish was arrested without incident and is being held on $20,000 bail. According to the complaint filed on Friday, the woman is accused of four counts sexual contact with a 14-year-old between Feb. 1 and March 30, 2014.

Graduation Round-up

It’s that time of year again when a new crop of high school seniors look forward to traveling whatever paths they’ve chosen for themselves and more than a few eighth-grade students are looking forward with a combination of dread and anticipation, to beginning their high school years.

Of course graduation ceremonies mark these transitions and there are many planned for area schools. For those with friends or loved ones graduating this year, here is a list of graduations for easy scheduling. Locations are at the school unless otherwise noted.

Anti-bullying campaign founder says issue is epidemic that requires community solutions

The statistic is staggering: 56 percent of school children, grades 5-12, or about 13 million nationwide say they've been a target of bullies at one time or another.

It's a problem that affects communities, families and schools. Tackling the issue takes a commitment from parents, teachers, law enforcement, elected officials and children themselves. That was the message delivered Saturday at workshop in Carson City presented by the founding members of the national nonprofit group Teach Anti-Bullying, Inc.

Pizza Factory Helps Eagle Valley Middle School on Thursday

Students and staff at Eagle Valley Middle School need the community's help. Thursday, April 24 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m., the generous owners of Pizza Factory 3120 Hwy. 50 E., #3, will donate 20 percent of the entire day's earnings to the EVMS parent teacher organization.

The donation will help with purchase CRT testing snacks for the entire student body. The community is asked to come in, call in or carry out pizza, sandwiches or pasta and help raise funds for Eagle Valley Middle School.

Eagle Valley Middle School Competes in State Science Olympiad

An extra-curricular activity at Eagle Valley Middle School, 11 Carson City students prepared for three months at after school meetings and on their own to compete in the state Science Olympiad held March 8 in Las Vegas. The team is coached by Josh Billings, 8th grade science teacher with assistance from family and teachers.

Teacher wins state culinary title

Penny Reynolds came to Carson High School 17 years ago as a science teacher. She found herself burned out after teaching home economics for 11 years at Eagle Valley Middle School and was looking for something new.

Eagle Valley Middle School Science Olympiad Team Triumphs at Regional Tournament

The Eagle Valley Middle School Science Olympiad team won 1st place at regional competition held at University of Nevada Reno on Saturday, Feb. 8 against several teams from the Northern Nevada area.

Competition at the middle school level is opened to grades 6-9. Coached by EVMS science teacher, Josh Billings, the team is composed of EVMS 6th-8th graders and a freshman from CHS.

Uniform Crime Reporting: Carson City has lowest crime rate since 1994

The Carson City Sheriff has received its preliminary crime data for the calendar year of 2013. The data, known as Uniform Crime Reporting (UCR), is collected under precise standards and reported by agencies across the United States. In return, the information is shared in publications such as Crime and Justice in Nevada, published in the summer months by the Nevada Department of Public Safety. Caution should remain when comparing data from one community to another, as numerous variations must be considered which could alter assumptions.

Eagle Valley Middle School Gets a Re-Do at Pizza Factory

Carson City teen flown to hospital after being hit by vehicle at the roundabout

UPDATE 5:45PM: Carson City fire and ambulance personnel responded to an accident Wednesday afternoon where a 14-year-old boy was hit by a vehicle. His injuries appear to be non-life threatening, according to the Carson City Sheriff's Office.

The accident happened at around 1:30 p.m. at the roundabout located at 5th and Fairview, said Carson City Fire Chief Stacey Giomi. Care Flight transported the teen to Renown Medical Center in Reno.

Opinion: Spending Other People’s Money

When most of us spend our personal funds for a good or service, we strive for maximum value because our funds are finite.

Public spending, whether at the Federal, state or local level, occurs because of borrowed money, taxes and user fees ultimately paid for by an overlapping pool of individuals and businesses.

Improvement grant, Nevada bills to be discussed at Tuesday school board meeting

An update on Nevada Legislature bills and an informational update on an improvement grant for Eagle Valley Middle School are among items on the Carson City School Board agenda when it meets Tuesday.
The regular meeting of the board will be Tuesday, 7 p.m. in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center, 851 E. William Street.

CHS Senatorette Cheer Camp at Eagle Valley Middle School

CHS cheerleaders will be hosting a camp for kids in k-8th grade on Saturday, February 23rd from 9a.m. to noon at Eagle Valley Middle School, 4151 E Fifth St, Carson City. Carson City teams earn high honors in Nevada First LEGO League Robotics tournament

Several Carson City school teams received high honor while competing in the third Northern Nevada First LEGO League tournament in Sparks this weekend, including a Judge's Award for the "Salon" team of Carson Middle School and the Project Presentation Awarded to the "Junior Geek Squad' of Eagle Valley Middle School.

Carson City Road Report for July 16-22

There will be nightly lane closures on US 395 from the junction of US 50W (Spooner) to 1st Street in Minden, Sunday through Thursday, between 6:00 p.m. and 6:00 a.m. There will be flagger controlled traffic. Please drive with caution.

There will be work at the following locations as a result of the Freeway Landscaping Project. Traffic control may be in effect.

  • North Carson Street, in the vicinity of the freeway overpass.
  • Arrowhead Drive between N. Carson Street and Garnet Way.
  • College Parkway in the vicinity of the Freeway.

New features in store for Fremont Elementary School

Fremont Elementary School grounds are currently under construction for a project to create a new and safer traffic pattern, making it easier for parents to drop off their children at school.

The new installations for the school consist of newly reconfigured parking areas to better cope with congestion on nearby roads. A pick-up area specifically designed for the kindergartners is also being installed on the east side of the school.

Crime log: Carson City mother keeps kids out of school, is arrested

Carson City Sheriff's deputies arrested a 32-year-old woman at around noon Thursday for five instances of failure to prevent truance, five instances of interfering with pupil attendence at school, and five instances of attendence in public school requirement failures.

A school resource officer was contact by the principal of a local elementary school, who notified him of four children who had been missing from school since the beginning of November, coupled with several reports from a neighbor about children playing outside when they should be attending school.
