Featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Kate Marshall, who on Jan. 7, 2019 became the 35th Lieutenant Governor of the State of Nevada. From 2007 to 2015, she served as Nevada's 21st State Treasurer.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include the final V&T Railway train rides of the 2019 season, the 27th annual Carson City Pumpkin Patch at Seeliger Elementary School, fundraisers around town, coin press demonstrations at the Nevada State Museum, comedy at the Carson Nugget and more!

Carson Nugget and the Carson City based Food for Thought organization are hosting a coat drive for children now through Nov. 15. Organizers of this drive are asking for donations of new coats, for children ages 5 to 18, which will be distributed to children at the Kids Christmas Brunch, to be held Dec. 23 at the Carson Nugget Grand Ballroom.

MINDEN — Douglas County Sheriff’s Office put on their cowboy hats, rallied together and took to showing off their “Git Up Challenge” moves producing a video to share across social media platforms.

DCSO’s own take on the viral dance challenge craze was inspired by the Blanco Brown song ‘The Git Up’. Watch the video here.

Kids will enjoy trick or treating and playing games with Women Investigating Ghost Sightings at St. Mary's Art Center, formerly St. Marie Louise Hospital. Admission is complimentary, donations greatly appreciated.

Going into the second week of October, there's plenty of events around the capital city for this Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2019 including a morning walk, evening hike and a bike ride with Muscle Powered. There's also art showings, the grand opening of Carson City's Postal Annex, family movie night at the Carson City Library featuring "Muppets from Space," as well as Big Band jazz music with a fall theme at Living the Good Life and more. Through the month of October, Michael Hohl Motor Company in Carson City will collect pet food donations to fill a pickup truck with pet food to support Pets of the Homeless. The dealership will donate all supplies to Friends in Service Helping, also known as FISH, rural northern Nevada’s largest social services program.

Featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Laura Leigh, President of Wild Horse Education, a 501(c)(3) registered public charity. She has been involved in anti-slaughter issues for more than two decades, carrying on the work pioneered by Velma Johnston (1912-1977), who came to be known as "Wild Horse Annie" for her fight to gain federal protection of wild horses and burros.

Enjoy an evening of big-band music by the Mile High Jazz Band with vocalist Jakki Ford on Tuesday, October 8, 7:30 to 9:30 p.m. at Living the Good Life Bistro, 1480 N. Carson Street in Carson City. Admission is free and donations are welcome. Dinner and late night menus are available.

Nevada Raider Nation - Carson City Chapter will host a game watch of the Oakland Raiders vs Chicago Bears at 10 a.m. Sunday, Oct. 6 at Jimmy G's, 301 N. Carson St., in Carson City.

The game, televised live from London, will be shown on three TV screens. New members are welcome to watch with the veterans, and are welcome to join. Membership is $20 per person.

Virginia Range Wildlife Protection Association is working with the Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space to install a fence at Centennial Park. This fence will help keep the wild horses in the hills and off the golf course, softball fields and out of the businesses and neighborhoods as well.

Going into the last day of the month, Monday, Sept. 30, 2019 around the Carson City area and it looks to be quite chilly in the morning and then warming up some into the afternoon. Events include a luncheon with Nevada's State Treasurer Zach Conine, an art class and showings, West Coast swing dancing, and more. Enjoy the day.

This weekend will see the season’s first cold snap and dip below freezing temperatures. The McKinney-Vento Students in Transition Program in Carson City is seeking donations of new (not used) coats and jackets for students in transition. Students in Transition are those individuals who lack a fixed, regular and adequate nighttime residence.

Connected Horse, a nonprofit organization working with local barns and therapeutic equine centers, is excited to expand its powerful evidence based workshops with horses to benefit people with early stage dementia and their care partners. There are openings for participants in evidenced based, equine guided workshops exploring how activities with horses benefit people with dementia along with their care partners.

Nevada Raider Nation, Carson City Chapter will host an Oakland Raiders vs Indianapolis Colts Game Watch at 10 a.m. Sunday, Sept. 29 at Jimmy G's, 301 N. Carson St., in Carson City.

New fans are welcome to join Chapter members and root on the Oakland Raiders. Jimmy G's will offer drink specials, while members will grill hot dogs for the crowd. Donations to cover the cost of food are accepted. A 50/50 cash drawing will be held as well.

Events include the Rockabilly Riot car show, Dayton Valley Days, a pancreatic cancer awareness walk at Silver Oak Golf Course, the annual Pooch Plunge at the Carson Aquatic Facility, horse endurance races in Virginia City, history talks at Mormon Station Park and much more!

David Wise, age 82, passed away on August 29, 2019. Dave was a 2nd generation Nevadan born in Carson City on July 14, 1937 to Roy and Lynn (Stewart) Wise. He was an amazing man who loved life, he was easy going, caring, funny, loving, and always had the most positive attitude. He was always smiling, even in the end.

He was so well liked, loved by others and had so many friends who thought highly of him. He loved his family and his extended family who just simply became his family.

Carson City Kiwanis is serving short stacks for a tall cause at the Carson City Applebee’s on Oct. 5, 2019 from 8 to 10 a.m. The entire proceeds of this event will support the Ralph Denny Memorial Scholarship that awards a one-time $750 scholarship to a local high school graduate each school year. Originally named the Carson City Kiwanis Annual Scholarship, it was renamed following the passing of long-time Kiwanis member, Ralph Denny.

Coming up on the final stretch of the work week, Thursday, Sept. 19, 2019 is shaping up to be eventful around the capital city area, including a morning Tahoe Rim Trail hike hosted by Muscle Powered, a meeting of the Carson City Board of Supervisors, a Status of Women in Nevada meeting at the Carson Nugget, activities at the library including the first in a series of Job Seeking With Google workshops, plus the first of the three-day Rockabilly Riot car show at Mills Park and more. He will describe the challenges of putting out a new edition every 24 hours in the brave new world of online competition, private equity acquisitions and print journalism consolidation, even while plans unfold to build a new police headquarters right where the RGJ's newsroom now stands.

The Carson Chamber Singers, a performing group of the Carson City Symphony Association, will begin rehearsals on Tuesday, September 17, for their 35th season. Rehearsals are Tuesdays at 6:30 p.m. under the direction of William Belcher at the Choral Room in Carson High School, 1111 N. Saliman Road in Carson City.
