The Friends of the Carson City Library received a donation from the Southwest Gas Foundation for $2,850 to develop the library’s creative learning department for school-aged children, including Makerspace abilities.

30th Annual Casino Night by the Kiwanis Club of Dayton Township will be Saturday March 14 at the Dayton Community Center, 170 Pike Street. Food starts at 5 p.m. and games start at 6 p.m.

The Greenhouse Project will be in the spotlight at a Carson City Democratic luncheon, plus fitness events, West Coast swing dance lessons at Carson Lanes and a Carson City Parks and Rec led full moon hike up Dead Truck Canyon. All are invited to the Carson City Native And Newcomers Club meeting on Thursday, March 12. Our club is a nonprofit serving the Carson City area. We meet monthly except, August, for lunch and discussion.

The Carson City Republican Women's Club will hear former U.S. Senator from Nevada Dean Heller at its upcoming luncheon, Tuesday, March 17, 2020 at Casino Fandango in Carson City. Senator Heller will address the current political atmosphere. Social time is 11 a.m. and the meeting will be called to order at 11:30 a.m.

The monthly Downtown Carson City Wine Walk takes place Saturday followed by a performance from Tom Petty and Rod Stewart tribute bands during The Do Drop In’s “A Face in the Crowd” homeless fundraiser at Fuji Park. St. Teresa School will host its 17th annual Crab Feed Fundraiser. Combined with comedy at the Carson Nugget and Brewery Arts Center, the Carson City region is in store for a busy weekend. Just like all of the other seniors here at the school, I am working on my Senior Project, a graduation requirement, in order to benefit not only myself but also those animals in the community who need a home.

Every year Carson City’s Leisure Hour Club recognizes local not-for-profit groups that excel in supporting the greater Carson City community. On Feb. 19 the club donated $500 to the Nevada State Prison Preservation Society. Glen Whorton, President of the NSPPS, accepted the donation and said that the donation will contribute to making the prison open to the public.

Each year, National Read Across America Day is observed on March 2, the birthday of children’s book author Ted Geisel, also known as Dr. Seuss. In celebration, many schools often dedicate an entire week as “Reading Week.” In Carson City, grade-schoolers at Fremont Elementary School got to celebrate a week prior to the observance with several community partners and local dignitaries, who visited classrooms to read to students.

Nevada Commission for Women and the Nevada Women’s Suffrage Celebration Committee formed to help facilitate collaboration among organizations in Nevada to celebrate and commemorate the 100th Anniversary of the 19th Amendment. As part of her Carson High School Senior Project graduation requirement, student, and committee member, Chloe Walt is working to educate Nevadans on the suffrage movement and the historic importance of the ratification of the 19th Amendment.
