A Carson High School student's senior project, designed to help parents and community members identify drug abuse and mental distress, was on display last week as part of a Partnership Carson City youth high school program display.

Jake Sullivan Roman, 20, of Carson City, Nev., died tragically on Jan. 18, 2020 as a result of injuries sustained in a snowmobiling accident. He was born on Jan. 20, 1999 in South Lake Tahoe, Calif., the son of Blair and Susan Roman. He was a 2017 graduate of Carson High School and was currently a junior at the University of Nevada, Reno.

Pizza Factory on Highway 50 in Carson City will hold a Feb. 4 fundraiser from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. with 20 percent of sales being donated to the Roman family to help with finances during this extreme loss.

The Carson City School District is celebrating two new National Board Certified Teachers from the National Board of Professional Teaching Standards. Recognition will come at Tuesday’s school board meeting. NBCT is widely considered to be the highest professional recognition for educators and includes a five percent pay increase in acknowledgement of accomplished teaching.

Heading into Tuesday, activities around the capital city area include a meeting of the Carson City School Board, a gathering of the Carson City Toastmasters at Max Casino, a free presentation in Gardnerville that focuses on understanding Alzheimer's and dementia, plus a showing of the documentary about social media, "Like" in Reno, art exhibitions, and more.

The Capital City Arts Initiative announces its exhibition, Photo Finished 2020, at the Community Development Building, the Brick, 108 E Proctor Street, Carson City. Nine students from Carson High School’s Advanced Photography program have work in the exhibit.

The public is invited to attend the 20th annual Feast of Chocolate Event hosted by the American Association of University Women on Saturday, Feb. 8, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Carson Plaza and Event Center, 211 E. 9th Street, Carson City.

Heading into the last Monday of January 2020, we're looking at sunny skies and a warm-up, with highs in the low 50s. Benjamin Franklin, one of the best gamers of all time said, “We do not stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing.” The adults sure could learn a thing or two from the students at CHS because Winterfest 2020 played out, pun intended, just like it was supposed to with Carson's Got Game being the theme.

Did you make a New Year’s Resolution to learn more about our community and its cultural heritage? We hope you did, but if you didn’t, it’s never too late. Kick-off 2020 by visiting the Wungnema House in Mills Park, as well as the Foreman-Roberts House on North Carson Street. These houses represent 2 different aspects of our community’s cultural heritage. Both historic houses are open from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday.

The last Carson City School Board meeting of January will be held Tuesday, Jan. 28 in the Sierra Room of the Community Center, located at 851 E. William Street beginning at 7 p.m.

On the docket for discussion will be the rezoning of Fremont Elementary-zoned students for Eagle Valley, recognition of teachers, an update on the elementary reading program, and more.

Heading into the last weekend of January there’s a mountain of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include a Chinese New Year Celebration at the Nevada State Museum and the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada. The Carson Comedy Club hosts its first Military Appreciation Night on Friday at the Carson Nugget. Carson Valley’s 18th annual Eagles and AG Photo Contest will be underway and live music will keep the Silver State buzzing with excitement. Read on for more information.

The Carson City Native and Newcomers Club invites you to our monthly meetings. Our club is all volunteer and charitably run. We meet the second Thursday of every month except August.

We meet at the Black Bear restaurant inside of Max Casino on the second Thursday of the month at 11:30 a.m. We order our own lunches and then have our meeting.

Heading into Thursday, activities lined up include a cardio and strength connection class offered through Carson Tahoe Health and Wellness, a Polka Dot Powerhouse Women's Group luncheon at Red's Old 395 Grill, art showings, live music with Dale Poune at Gather, a meeting of the Carson City GOP at Casino Fandango featuring speaker Bob Potts from the Governor's Office of Economic Development, and more.

Carson City School District officials confirmed Tuesday that Carson High School Vice Principal Marc Rodina was arrested for allegedly driving under the influence. According to a statement from the district, the incident occurred Saturday, Jan. 11, 2020, in Douglas County.

With the annual nationwide homeless “Count Day” around the corner, two Carson High School seniors are conducting a homeless drive and have created a GoFundMe page for monetary donations to support the effort.

The Carson High School community is mourning the loss of Jake Roman, a 2017 CHS graduate and son of Athletic Director, teacher and head football coach Blair Roman. Jake died from injuries in a snowmobile accident at Lake Tahoe, according to friends of the family.

Winterfest is here, and the theme, Carson's Got Game, is more than just a nice motto, it is a series of multiple physical board games, playground games, and video games. According to CHS physical education teacher and Leadership adviser Ann Britt, “the class color teachers will be playing a game of life-size Hungry Hippo during the assembly Jan. 17, and we will be doing a door decorating competition with judging taking place Jan. 21; the top three winners will receive a gift card to Starbucks.”

Partnership Carson City youth high school program participant Nancy Mejorado, 17, is creating a mock teenage bedroom for parents and community leaders to better know how to spot drugs among youth belongings.

The mock bedroom, which is Mejorado’s Carson High School senior project, opens to the public 2:30-7 p.m. Jan. 22-23 at Partnership’s main office, 1925 N. Carson St.

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. The Union will host a dining fundraiser for the Greenhouse Project on Friday, and artist Jakota Wass performs at Bella Vita Bistro. The 43rd annual Wild Sheep Show will be held at the Reno-Sparks Convention. Comedian Marc Yaffee headlines the Carson Comedy Club on Saturday with much more in store for the weekend! Carson High School Senior Cade Crookshanks, 17, has been selected by the Nevada Section of the Society for Range Management to participate in the High School Youth Forum, a SRM sponsored youth activity held jointly during the 73 Annual SRM meeting. The meeting will be held in Denver, Colo., Feb. 16-20, 2020.

The following are results from Carson High School Senators Ski Team from races held on Wednesday. On Jan. 29 the Senators return to competition with a Slalom race at Heavenly.

The first significant winter storm of 2020 will be blowing into the region Thursday afternoon, bringing gusty winds, heavy snow in the Sierra and 1-2 inches of snow possible in the lower valleys.
