Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of events around the Carson City region over the next three days. Dozens of sweets are in store for Saturday. The American Association of University Women holds its 20th annual Feast of Chocolate at the Carson Plaza and Event Center. Artsy Fartsy Gallery hosts its 9th annual Jewelry and Chocolate Show with several new decorative pieces. To cap-off Saturday, the legendary Cab Calloway Orchestra makes its way to the capital city.

Heading into the first Monday of February, we're hoping your post Super Bowl day is filled with a few extra dollars in your pocket, tasty leftovers for lunch and some good-hearted conversational quarterbacking. Activities around the capital city include a luncheon highlighting the campaign of Democratic presidential candidate Amy Klobuchar, a free Partnership Carson City Yoga class at the Carson City Community Center, art activities and showings, swing dance lessons at Carson Lanes and more.

The CHS, NJROTC Orienteers competed in a weekend long orienteering festival in Anza Borrego State Park, Calif., Jan. 17-18. During the festival, team members competed in three different races over the two days.

With some clouds, sunshine and a weekend warmup ahead, going into the last Thursday of January brings a cardio and strength connection class offered through Carson Tahoe Health and Wellness, library activities, Pilates at the Brewery Arts Center, a South Carson Street pre-construction meeting at the Carson City Community Center that will be streamed live by going here. Benjamin Franklin, one of the best gamers of all time said, “We do not stop playing because we grow old, we grow old because we stop playing.” The adults sure could learn a thing or two from the students at CHS because Winterfest 2020 played out, pun intended, just like it was supposed to with Carson's Got Game being the theme.

Heading into the last weekend of January there’s a mountain of activities around the Carson City region over the next three days. Events include a Chinese New Year Celebration at the Nevada State Museum and the Children's Museum of Northern Nevada. The Carson Comedy Club hosts its first Military Appreciation Night on Friday at the Carson Nugget. Carson Valley’s 18th annual Eagles and AG Photo Contest will be underway and live music will keep the Silver State buzzing with excitement. Read on for more information.

Bee City USA No. 76 will meet Wednesday, Jan. 22 at 5:30 p.m.at the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center at its first quarterly meeting of the year. The purpose of the committee is to provide opportunities for community dialogue about ways to enhance and protect pollinator habitat in Carson City.

Hitting the halfway mark of the shortened work week, Wednesday events around town include Northern Nevada Development Authority's The Business Edge monthly meeting, "State of the Counties" at Casino Fandango, a Capital City Arts Initiative reception for the "Photo Finished 2020" exhibition featuring the works of 9 Carson High School students, a Bee City USA Carson City meeting at the community center, a women's Seeking Safety workshop, and more.

Theatre Carson City is thrilled to announce our upcoming production of Shrek the Musical, Jr, which will run for 8 performances over two weekends, January 17-26, 2020 in Bob Boldrick Theatre at the Carson City Community Center.

The South Carson Complete Streets Project design is complete, Carson City Public Works and the project contractor, Sierra Nevada Construction, Inc., will be hosting a pre-construction meeting to present the anticipated construction schedule and the completed project design.

The meeting will be held on Thursday, January 30, 2020, from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the Carson City Community Center, in the Sierra Room, located at 851 E. William St., Carson City.

Carson City’s The Wheelhouse, which specializes in all things skating, scootering, bicycling and more, has moved their location to 1800 E. William Street, Suite No. 1, to be closer to the Mills Park Skate Park and more centrally located within town.

The Wheelhouse has always been heavily involved in the Carson City community, from hosting skate and scooter competitions to one-on-one training sessions with kids, all with the value of instilling confidence and camaraderie in mind.

Moving forward to the first day of the work week, we're looking at sunny skies then blustery conditions Monday night and a slight chance of snow showers in the valleys into Tuesday morning. Activities around the capital city include the opening of the Stewart Indian School Cultural Center and Museum, the Winter Reading Challenge at the Carson City Library, a luncheon highlighting the campaign of Democratic presidential candidate Michael Bennet, plus a free yoga class at the community center and more. Soroptimist International of Carson City is pleased to announce our “Women Helping Women” Honorees to be recognized for their dedication to improving the lives of women or girls in our community, at our inaugural “Celebrating Women Helping Women” event on Feb. 20, 2020 at the Carson Nugget, from 5:45 p.m. to 8:30 p.m.

Heading into Thursday, today is Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. Across the country on January 9 each year, citizens take the lead to show support on National Law Enforcement Appreciation Day. Law Enforcement Officers of every rank and file have chosen a profession that puts their life on the line every day for their communities. Thank you law enforcement. In other happenings, events are lined up throughout the day including art showings, an open invitation to a meeting of the Carson City Natives and Newcomers Club, A Prison Hill open space planning open house hosted by Parks and Rec, the 2020 Winter Reading Challenge at the Carson City Library, "School of Rock, the Senior Years" at the Brewery Arts Center and more.

Heading into Monday and moving forward to the first full week of 2020 we're looking at mostly sunny skies and a daytime high near 50. Activities lined include the Winter Reading Challenge at the Carson City Library, organizers of the Pete Buttigieg presidential campaign will give a presentation, art activities, plus a free yoga class at the Community Center and more. Not only did the nonprofit organization Fellowship of Christian Athletes open their Christmas tree lot Nov. 24 to raise funds for their organization’s events and outreaches, they also supported other organizations and individuals by giving away 350 Angel Tree Christmas stockings and Christmas trees to Carson City children and families in need, and they also partnered with Sierra Lutheran High School to donate 75 trees to the US Marines at the Warfare Training Center in Coleville, Calif.

CARSON CITY — Royce Ponton gave birth to a new baby boy, Leviathan Wayne Ponton at 12:53 AM on Jan. 1, the first baby of 2020 at Carson Tahoe; he also achieved the title of first Northern Nevada baby born in 2020! But, unbeknownst to Royce, she had even more to celebrate!

The Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department host an open house to discuss planning efforts for the 2,500-acre Prison Hill Recreation Area and adjacent properties.

Carson City is now accepting Letters of Intent to Apply for our Community Support Services Grant (CSSG). Non-profit organizations and government agencies are qualified to fill out the Letter of Intent. Projects or programs must be for Carson City residence. The Carson City Board of Supervisors will meet Thursday, Jan. 2 beginning at 8:30 a.m. in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center located at 851 E. William Street. On the agenda is a discussion about funding allocations and a contract to upgrade the Rifle Range, plus board member commission appointments and more.

Anyone is welcome to join Partnership Carson City for its second free Wellness Yoga series Mondays at 5:15 p.m. for one hour at the Carson City Community Center.

All ages and genders can attend to take a physical and mental break as well as approach pain management in a holistic way, said Hannah McDonald, executive director of Partnership Carson City.

The Alzheimer’s Association hosted Dementia Conversations at the Carson City Library on Dec. 11, 2019. This event was held to address areas of concern expressed by dementia caregivers and professionals who attended the Carson City Alzheimer’s Community Forum earlier this year.

The Carson Nugget and Food For Thought, a Carson city nonprofit that is dedicated to feeding children in need, teamed up this fall and launched a winter coat drive that culminated Monday where dozens of children were able to pick their new jackets and parkas and enjoy a holiday brunch among friends and family.

For this week's installment of Carson Now's Five Questions, Carson City's Sheriff Ken Furlong sat down to discuss how being Sheriff has shaped his life, issues facing Carson City currently, mental health training for law enforcement and more.
