Submitted by editor on Wed, 04/30/2014 - 9:05amSo the big game tag application deadline came and went and you somehow forgot to get your application in. Or you applied for your hunts but you’re always looking for other opportunities. If either of these scenarios hits home for you, we would like to direct your attention to the Nevada Dream Tag.
The Nevada Dream Tags Program is a raffle that allows resident and nonresident sportsmen a chance at the hunt of a lifetime while also contributing to Nevada’s wildlife habitat. The tags are similar to other western states’ raffle tags and “hunt of a lifetime” tags.

The Silver State Tag already allows hunters the chance to hunt one of four premier big game species (mule deer, Rocky Mountain elk, Nelson (desert) bighorn sheep and pronghorn antelope) anywhere in the state, but now you also have the chance to win thousands of dollars of hunting gear as well.
Lahontan Cutthroat Trout fishing in March
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Fri, 03/07/2014 - 10:45amThis is my annual reminder that if you are a trout fisherman and are new to our area, you may not be aware that some of our best Lahontan Cutthroat Trout fishing is at Pyramid Lake in the month of March.
Pyramid Lake (which is roughly the same surface size as Lake Tahoe) is about 30 miles north of Reno-Sparks, and it contains Lahontan Cutthroat Trout that can easily run into “Double Digits” in weight. That's big!
The lake is the terminus of the Truckee River which begins at Lake Tahoe.

The same would be true if you poked your head in his door well after closing. After a while you would have to wonder, “Does this guy ever go home?”

Outdoors with Don Q: Trout fishing at Pyramid Lake in November
Submitted by Carson Now Reader on Wed, 11/06/2013 - 11:10pmIf you are a trout fisherman, you might want to consider taking a fishing trip (or more than one) to Pyramid Lake this month to fish for Lahontan Cutthroat trout that can run up to double digits in weight.
Old timers told me, many years ago, that the two months of November and March are the best times of the year to fish at that large desert lake, north of Reno-Sparks. And, through the years, I have found that to be true, even though I have fished at Pyramid many other months of the year.

Apprentice license gives beginners chance to experience hunting
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Mon, 08/26/2013 - 11:32amHave you ever thought about giving hunting a try? Well in the past if you wanted to try your hand at hunting you were required to take an eight hour hunter education course; purchase a hunting license and whatever stamps were necessary; figure out the correct gear you need for your hunt and then find someone to show you the ropes. It’s how hunting works in Nevada, but it does tend to scare off the casual observer who is not totally convinced that hunting is for them. That’s where the Apprentice Hunting License comes in.

Don Q's Fishing Report for the week of July 24
Submitted by admin on Wed, 07/24/2013 - 8:18amANGEL LAKE, ELKO COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (http://www.ndow.org) reports:
Fishing varies from day to day, with some days being good, while others being slow. Best time of day is from about 6:00 am to 10:30 am and then again after the shadows start to hit the water in late afternoon.
Best conditions seem to be with a 5 to 10 mph breeze, putting a small chop on the water.
A few fish are being taken with small dry flies, mostly yellow in color, but most of the luck is still coming with nymphs below an indicator or dry fly.
