Kyburz Fire Update: Highway 50 west of Lake Tahoe reopened to one-lane traffic
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Fri, 07/24/2015 - 5:53pmHere's the latest from the Kyburz Fire burning in El Dorado County west of South Lake Tahoe: Highway 50 was re-opened Friday for one lane of traffic at 5:30 p.m. with vehicles being escorted through the fire area. The escorted portion is about a mile long due to firefighting equipment on the roadway.
East bound traffic will be metered from Sly Park to Meyers and escorted from Alder Bridge through the fire area. West bound traffic will be escorted from Sand Flat through the Fire area.
Northern Nevada native returns to area to focus on pediatric dental care

Effective July 7, 2015, Dr. Parsons will be providing Northern Nevada youth with exceptional pediatric dental care and hopes to educate area children and their families on the value of good oral hygiene and its impact on overall health.
Bufflehead Selected for 2016 Nevada Duck Stamp Art Contest

The contest is sanctioned by the Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioners, with the winning artwork to be featured on the 2016-2017 state stamp.
New Project in Lyon and Mineral counties planned to help bi-state sage grouse

Lake Tahoe Roadside Boat Inspection stations open for the season

Continuing a winning tradition, UNR concrete canoe team takes regionals
Submitted by editor on Mon, 04/06/2015 - 3:29pmContinuing a winning tradition that began in 2006, the University of Nevada, Reno concrete canoe team won the regional qualifying event and is heading to the National Concrete Canoe Championship races for the 10th time in a row, to defend the school’s national championship title won last year.
The team dominated the seven northern California teams in the five race categories, paddling their 138-pound canoe, Aquatone, to win each of the races at the Mid-Pacific Regional Competition at Lake Natoma in Folsom, Calif. Friday, April 3.
Nevada wildlife officials seek information on bull elk poaching in northern Elko County
Submitted by editor on Fri, 04/03/2015 - 3:41pmNevada game wardens are seeking any tips or information on a poached bull elk found on the south side of the Meadow Creek-Jarbidge road in Hunt Unit 071, 10 miles west of the Diamond A Ranch in northern Elko County.
“The bull was shot through the heart and left to rot only 50 yards from Forest Road 071,” said Jason Jackson, game warden for the Nevada Department of Wildlife. “We really want to catch the criminal that stole Nevada’s resources by poaching and wasting this animal.”
Silver State Tag offers the hunt of a lifetime

The Silver State Tag already allows hunters the opportunity to hunt one of four big game species (mule deer, Rocky Mountain elk, Nelson (desert) bighorn sheep and pronghorn antelope) anywhere in the state, but this year the winner could also walk away with thousands of dollars’ worth of hunting gear and services.
Weather Service: Breezy cool down returns this week around Carson City region

While high temperatures will be near to just slightly below normal, it will feel downright chilly compared to the record or near record warmth the past five days. In addition to the cooler temperatures, breezy conditions are expected today and Tuesday along with slight chances for showers north of Interstate 80 Tuesday through Thursday, according to the weather service.
Jennifer Newmark named NDOW wildlife diversity division administrator

The position oversees the division responsible for Nevada’s diverse wildlife heritage through the protection, management and restoration of non-game species.
Newmark has almost 16 years of experience in increasingly responsible roles working with Nevada’s wildlife. In her most recent position, Jennifer served as the Administrator of the Nevada Natural Heritage Program, an independent state agency within the Department of Conservation and Natural Resources.
Windy conditions Monday with warming trend through the week
Submitted by editor on Sun, 03/22/2015 - 5:09pmA spring storm will move into the Sierra and western Nevada tonight bringing gusty winds and chances for rain and Sierra snow through Monday morning, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.
Gusty winds will create rough boating conditions on area lakes this afternoon as well as turbulence for air travel. Strong southwest crosswinds with gusts to 35-45 mph on area roads, including Highways 50 and Highway 395 and and I-580 and I-80, may result in difficult driving for high profile vehicles.
Jim Rackley wins 2014 Wayne E. Kirch Conservation Award
Submitted by editor on Fri, 03/20/2015 - 2:43pmJim Rackley of Winnemucca, Nev. has won the Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioner’s 2014 Wayne E. Kirch Conservation award. Rackley’s commitment to Nevada’s wildlife resources was recognized during the March 20, 2015 Nevada Board of Wildlife Commissioner’s meeting in Reno, Nevada, where he received the award.
Rackley was nominated for the award by Nevada Muleys a non-profit organization dedicated to ensuring the conservation of mule deer and their habitats in Nevada. According to the nomination, in 2014 Rackley had a “very impressive record of time and commitment to Nevada’s wildlife.”

Pyramid Lake, which is roughly the same surface size as Lake Tahoe, is about 30 miles north of Reno-Sparks, and it contains Lahontan Cutthroat Trout that can weigh more than 20 pounds.

NDOW Seeks Input on Restoration Project for Comins and Bassett Lakes
Submitted by editor on Thu, 03/05/2015 - 12:28pmThe Nevada Department of Wildlife Fisheries Division has released a proposed plan to restore the sport fisheries in Comins and Bassett Lakes near Ely in White Pine County by removing northern pike. The plan is available for public comment for 30 days beginning March 5, 2015.
Until the mid-2000s Comins Lake was a premier sport fishery for rainbow and brown trout, supporting up to 35,000 angler days per year. The illegal introduction of northern pike in the early 2000s decimated the trout fishery and angler use is now less than 2,000 days per year.
Information sought on deer poaching near base of Ruby Mountains
Submitted by editor on Tue, 03/03/2015 - 3:37pmNevada Department of Wildlife game wardens are seeking the public’s assistance with the poaching of a mule deer doe on Broken Arrow Lane in Pleasant Valley, just east of Spring Creek at the base of the Ruby Mountains.
The poaching occurred on Feb. 20, 2015 at approximately 4 p.m. Two males were observed loading a mule deer doe, that had been shot in a residential yard, into a bright or electric blue late model Dodge pickup truck.
Weather Service: Cooler temperatures, snow showers unlikely for Carson City, Lake Tahoe
