Wind, rain and snow in the Sierra expected to arrive with weather system
A low pressure system will push a strong cold front through the Carson City region beginning Monday night, producing gusty winds, rain and snow showers and much colder temperatures, according to the National Weather Service.
Ahead of the front winds will increase Monday with peak gusts of 35 to 45 mph for most locations, while gusts up to 55 mph are possible in wind prone areas along Highway 395 and Interstate 580. Gusty winds will persist into Tuesday. These winds will produce hazardous boating conditions on Lake Tahoe and Pyramid Lake. For motorists, gusty winds will produce strong cross winds, which may restrict travel for high profile vehicles, and areas of blowing dust along Interstate 80 and Highways 50 and 95 through western Nevada.
Snow over the Sierra passes Monday Night and Tuesday will lead to slick roads above 7,000 feet. This includes the Mt. Rose Highway, Donner Summit, Echo Pass and Carson Pass. Snow will occur around the Tahoe basin at lake level, but snow may not stick to roads. Rain showers and a few thunderstorms are possible for western Nevada on Tuesday.
Afternoon highs will turn much colder as well. Highs on Monday will be in the mid 70s to near 80 for western Nevada with 70s for the Sierra. Behind the front Tuesday, highs will fall 20 to 25 degrees. This will place highs for western Nevada in the 50s to low 60s, while the Sierra will remain in the 40s to low 50s.
