know it’s weird. But every Fall, I don’t rush for the pumpkin spice lattes and the sweaters. It takes me awhile to embrace what some would call their favorite season. It usually takes until about now, a few days before Nevada Day, to notice that the loss of my beloved summer is turning into something new — the holiday season.

Retailers in Nevada and nationwide have ramped up hiring campaigns in preparation for the 2019 holiday shopping season. In the Silver State, the Retail Association of Nevada estimates retailers will boost hiring by 7,100 new positions during the October-to-December holiday shopping period.

I come from a very outcome driven profession, marketing communications. Every action is measured. ROI (return on investment), CPM (cost per thousand), everything is counted to make sure campaigns are effective. Outcomes are everything. Imagine how hard it was to transition into a much more human side of communications.

The Carson City Fair has been steadily growing and coming into its own the last few years, and has now decided to form an independent non-profit organization dedicated to continuing their work.

I was in yoga class this morning and the key idea was trust. As I moved and stretched, I remembered to trust my body and trust myself to go only as far as I could go. A 23-year-old Carson City man was arrested in the area of Highway 50 E and I 580 for felony conspiracy to violate UCS, child endangerment, contributing to the delinquency of a minor, and non-functioning brake lights.

Hello Carson City! I’ve been a little out of pocket since Burning Man. I have three sicknesses just pile on: playa lung, a head cold, and I wrapped the whole thing up with bronchitis. Doing life sick was pretty hard. But I found it was made possible by the number of times businesses in this area stepped up and said yes.

As the owners of Mom and Pop’s Diner for the past twenty years, we have had our ups and downs, as any business does. We have been very lucky to have such a great customer base, and friends. We want to tell all the individuals who have given their moral support that it means so much to Jamesa and myself.

Because the Judge’s verdict has created so much of a stir, it has been better then any kind of advertising money could buy. Everywhere we go, somebody says that this is just wrong, and tells us that it is obvious that it is personally against us.

This week, I got into a rousing text conversation about feeling imprisoned. We spoke about obligations, duty, and ultimately — the choices that led up to those imprisonments. Prison isn’t just a place for criminals to go to pay their retribution to society. We can create prisons for ourselves and not even know it.

As we were leaving Casino Fandango, after watching “The Lion King,” my friend Cathy turns to me and says, “you should write your column about what happens when people get power hungry.” I laughed because I was already thinking about what she was suggesting. This weekend, I was blessed to attend Gaia Gathering — an impactful gathering of healers from all walks of life. I was surrounded by many modalities of healing from a variety of cultures: artists, medicine men and women, yogis, energy healers, and spiritualists. As someone who heals companies and leaders through communication, I felt right at home. The messages rang through loud and clear and you will see many of my a-ha moments translated into my column here.

CARSON CITY — Attendees at the Largest Political Collectibles Show and Sale in the West will not only see a cross-section of national political memorabilia, but also have an opportunity to see rare political items from Nevada.

I have been described as fiercely independent. For years, I have forged my own path — proudly so. I’d tap by feet along to anthems for independent women and cheer myself on. My independence became a badge of honor. And why shouldn’t it be? It was hard one. In some ways, I had to battle for it. But being solo also had a side effect, I struggled in asking for help. “I can do it” became a mantra for me. When I had a short fall, I would hide it instead of asking for support. In business, you see it happening as siloing.

Once I heard someone say, “expectations are pre-meditated resentments.” I used to LOVE that statement. I proceeded to throw my expectations out the window and delight in what I got. Unfortunately, what I got was all over the place. It was unfocused. It was sometimes unacceptable.

The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition, "New Crop 2019", by artists Mark Combs and Frances Melhop at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery. CCAI will host an opening reception on Friday, June 7, 5 to 7 p.m. The artists will give a brief talk about their work at 5:30 p.m. The exhibition will be in the gallery from June 7 to Sept. 26, 2019.

A 51-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Friday afternoon in the area of Silver Sage and Sonoma for DUI drugs, failure to maintain lane, and failure to use due care, which resulted in a three car collision.

The woman was arrested after deputies responded to a traffic accident in which the driver who caused the accident appeared to be under the influence, according to the report.

The Nevada Department of Transportation is alerting drivers and organizations to prepare for an upcoming change to exit numbers on Interstate 580 from South Carson Street in Carson City to the Reno spaghetti bowl.

The last vacation I took was more than five years ago in Las Vegas. Being the country boy that I am, my arrival to the “Entertainment Capital of the World” was filled with both excitement and angst.

In an era where students are more comfortable communicating behind a screen rather than face-to-face, teaching Physical Education can be more than challenging at times. It seems that each year there are fewer students who enjoy physical activity. This year has been no different.

I just returned from Orange, Virginia from a conference held at Montpelier, former US President James Madison's estate. I was chosen among applicants to attend this conference because I think our community needs to know the cool educational opportunities in which teachers are embarking. The conference covered “Gender, Sexual Identity, and the Constitution.”

Mile High Band Association’s 2019 Jazz and Beyond Festival Committee is sponsoring an art contest for Carson-Tahoe area artists. Selected entries in the competition may be used to promote the festival, and the winning entry will be featured on the festival’s advertising poster and program cover.

A T-shirt may also feature one of the designs submitted.

The entry deadline is May 15th, 2019.

Under the Big Top, the 2019 circus-themed production of the Senior Follies, is seeking actors, dancers, singers and stage personnel for its upcoming show July 12-14. Auditions will be held Tuesday, April 2, from 5:30 to 7 p.m. at the Senior Center, 911 Beverly Drive in Carson City.
