Creating solid business development opportunities within the lucrative international travel market is the focus of the Governor’s Global Tourism Summit, Nov. 16-17 at Hilton Lake Las Vegas.

It will be a HUGE mistake by Western Nevada College if they allow the athletic programs to walk. Period. I have kept a low profile in this just mainly to sit back and observe what is going to happen. Now, I’m coming off the sidelines to express my opinion.

The college is doing this to save money and I do sympathize with them in that regard but, they are not looking at what the college AND the city will lose if the programs are gone. The loss of money to the city and college far outweighs the money that would be saved.

The Nevada Division of Tourism, also known as TravelNevada, recognized outstanding members of the state’s rural tourism industry Thursday, April 16 at the VolunTourism Awards dinner at the Carson Valley Inn. The annual event was part of the state’s 25th Rural Roundup tourism conference.

On Wednesday, April 15, Brian Crane (aka “Mr. Pickles”), nationally recognized syndicated cartoonist, will speak to the Carson City Leisure Hour Club on the inspiration for his cartoon strip “Pickles.”

Mr. Crane joins the Leisure Hour Club members close to the 25th anniversary of the debut of the comic strip "Pickles" in April 1990. His comments will provide the group with a little peek behind the curtains of how he creates Pickles, how he got started, and where he gets my ideas for the nationally recognized strip.

The Carson City Sheriff’s Office executed two search warrants Thursday and have arrested a Carson City man on felony charges related to the February burglary of local church, a Carson City sheriff’s lieutenant said.

Arrested was Dwayne Kirk Snyder, 36. He faces felony charges of commercial burglary and possession of stolen property in the Feb. 3, 2015 break-in of Capital Baptist Church located at 455 South Edmonds Drive.

The incidents have occurred primarily during daytime hours, said DCSO Sgt. Pat Brooks.

What's all the buzz about? The Mason Valley Beekeepers are hosting their 5th annual conference on Friday and Saturday, February 27 and 28, 2015 at Pioneer Crossing in Yerington, Nevada. The featured conference speaker is Randy Oliver, a world renowned "scientific beekeeper" from California.

Since October of 2014 the Carson City area has seen an increase in residential burglaries. Several of them have been along the main corridors of the west side of Carson City on West Winnie Lane and Washington streets. They are occurring during the day time while the residents are away from the home.

Linda Danaher recently joined the Reno Philharmonic Association as marketing director. Danaher is an experienced marketing professional, owning her own successful company, Danaher Design, LLC, since 2003.

The context covered what each Board member thought were the highlights in 2014, as well as their priorities for 2015. Informative and covering a broad spectrum of topics, three Board members classified the 1/8 of a cent sales tax as their number one highlight of 2014.

Another step in the right direction for the economic revitalization of South Shore and the Highway 50 corridor happened this week at the site of the new Hard Rock Hotel and Casino Lake Tahoe. The old Horizon sign came down and the Hard Rock sign went up.

This sign is just part of the $60 million renovation going on at the Stateline resort and casino, the site of the original Sahara Tahoe.

As many local businesses know, one cannot put in just any flashing, moving neon sign as there are Tahoe Regional Planning Agency restrictions on what can and cannot go up.

While many of us will be shopping for the best deal on Christmas presents criminals are planning ways of how to take advantage of us while we are distracted. Many of the tips provided involve common sense and can be practiced year round.

We are a very generous community and can fall victim to several scams that are ongoing, not just in Carson City but across the nation.

Nevada businesses and destinations attending the Governor’s Conference on Tourism, Oct. 27-29, will have the opportunity to meet with nearly 40 tour operators, receptive operators, wholesalers, and airlines from around the world at the conference’s ever-popular sales marketplace.

The Carson City Greenhouse Project at Carson High School is one of 14 projects in Nevada to receive specialty crop block grant money designed for organizations that promote and enhance speciality crops through education, research, marketing and production, the Nevada Department of Agriculture announced Tuesday.

The $21,577 in grant money earmarked for the Greenhouse Project will help fund the Growing America’s Future Farmer program, said JoAnne Skelly, extension educator with the University of Nevada and grant writer for the Greenhouse Project.

Now that Autumn has arrived, it’s a great time to explore the areas east of Carson City. These trails and back roads can be impassable in the winter, muddy in the Spring, and too hot during the Summer. This time of year, though, the dry conditions and mild temperatures make it the perfect time to go. One of our favorite Fall rides is the off-road route up to Virginia City via the American Flat Toll Road. With the area’s fun and lively Old West history, this ride has started to become an annual event.

As an incentive for Telsa and other companies to build in the Reno – Tahoe Industrial Center on USA Parkway and benefit Nevada, Interstate 11 should be built from Yerrington to tie into the Reno – Tahoe Industrial Center and to I-80. This should be presented to Telsa now.

Interstate 11 should be built parallel to US Highway 95 from Las Vegas to Tonapah on a straight line from Tonaph to Yerrington. Also I- 580 should be extended from Carson City to Yerrington which would give a direct route to Carson City and Reno.

CARSON CITY — The Nevada Army National Guard is set to team up with the Nevada Interscholastic Activities Association and become one of the association's partners for the 2014-2015 academic year, Nevada Guard and
NIAA officials said Thursday. The NIAA is the non-profit organization of secondary schools in Nevada that acts as the governing body of high school athletics and activities.

This week's guest on It's Your City is Kate Zook of the Silver State Fair Housing Council, a private non-profit agency based in Carson City that advocates for equal access to housing in Nevada.

As executive director of the council, Zook explains how the agency advocates for fair housing by providing a comprehensive program of outreach, education, and enforcement activities for consumers and housing providers.

Two local programs, Nevada Indian Territory and Ventana Sierra, Inc., received grant money from the Nevada Commission on Tourism designed to increase travel to the Carson City area.

The money is part of $985,146 in grant funding for projects throughout rural Nevada designed to increase travel to those areas, Lt. Gov. Brian Krolicki announced Wednesday at the commission’s quarterly meeting.

A Washoe County District Court Judge Friday ordered Gary Schmidt, Republican candidate for Senate District 16, to stop running an ad in his campaign advertising in which his opponent said was not true.

Judge Patrick Flanagan issued a preliminary injunction halting the broadcast of one of Schmidt’s advertisements until further hearings could be conducted on a defamation lawsuit Senator Ben Kieckhefer filed based on what he said was a false attack.

Senate District 16 covers Carson City and southern Washoe County.
