First shipments of Moderna COVID-19 vaccine arrive in Carson City region, Washoe County
Governor Sisolak announced Monday via social media that the first shipment of the approved Moderna COVID-19 vaccine has arrived in Northern Nevada, showing photos supplied by Carson City Health and Human Services.
Sisolak notes in a tweet, "While we wait for a widespread vaccine distribution, please continue to wear your mask, wash your hands, practice social distancing and stay home when you can."
Truckee Meadows Fire and Rescue also tweeted that it had received a shipment of 200 doses of the Moderna vaccine.
The vaccine "is thawing and will then be administered to our front line personnel.after they're thawed, are expected to be administered sometime on Tuesday," the tweet states.
On Friday, Dec. 18, 2020, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration issued an emergency use authorization for the second vaccineModerna, for the prevention of COVID-19. The emergency use authorization allows the Moderna COVID-19 vaccine to be distributed in the U.S for use in individuals 18 years of age and older.
Because the supply of COVID-19 vaccine in the United States is expected to be limited at first, CDC recommends that initial supplies of COVID-19 vaccine be allocated to healthcare personnel and long-term care facility residents. CDC made this recommendation on Dec. 3, 2020, and based it on recommendations from the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), an independent panel of medical and public health experts.
