Celebrate a Rockin’ Apocalypse Friday at Café at Adele’s

Café at Adele’s in Carson City hosts a Rockin’ Apocalypse Party, Friday with live music by The Mighty Surf Lords.

“Someone posted a picture of a bunch of alpacas in a field with a message about celebrating the ‘Alpacalypse’ and I thought, ‘Well maybe we should,’” said Charlie Abowd, Café at Adele’s chef and co-owner. “There has been a lot of stress and heartbreak this year and it is healthy at times to come together with good music and community to celebrate our blessings rather than continuing the fear.”

From “about 6:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m.,’ everyone’s invited to enjoy live music in the lounge, cocktails and special holiday fare.

“You know, everything we ever do with Charlie is so much fun and we look forward to sharing this evening with our Adele’s family and their guests, as always,” said Billy Woods, guitarist and vocalist.

The Mighty Surf Lords will be playing an array of classic surf favorites as well as some original pieces, including a local favorite, “The Christmas Song,” that has received a lot of air play and requests on KOZZ, Reno’s Classic Rock radio station.

The song was written as a commissioned piece and recorded with the Whitney Myer Band. While the commission was never paid (the investment guy was not who he claimed), the song has gone on to be a local holiday favorite.
“We took the song to Max Volume (at KOZZ) last year and he put it back in rotation this year,” Woods said. “(Max) said he wouldn’t play it if he didn’t like it, regardless of how many requests he got.”

While the song is yet unreleased for purchase, Woods and Karmin Courter-Robbins, Woods’ partner and the band’s bassist , say they’re considering releasing the song on a compilation CD to benefit in part, The Loving Hearts.

Co-founded by Woods and Courter Robbins, The Loving Hearts volunteers feed those in need each Sunday at Record Street in Reno. On average, they provide dinner to some 400 people weekly, with food provided by volunteers and area businesses.

Additionally, they are working on a book that tells their story and how The Loving Hearts came to be.
“We’re at Record Street every Sunday and are planning our Christmas/New Year’s dinner for Dec. 30 for anyone who would like to be a part of that,” Woods said, adding donations of hats, gloves, coats and blankets are always needed.

The Mighty Surf Lords will be joined Friday by drummer Jan Hansen, who has played with Billy Fontaine and The Rockets and The Hit Men among others and continues to keep his fingers in “the business.”
“I put having fun at the top while still taking (music) very seriously,” Hansen said. “I used to live in Carson so maybe some of the old pals will come in a join us … we gotta keep it fun.”

While there are some who may take the dire predictions of Dec. 21 seriously, Woods is keeping it light.
“The way I see it, is just in case we don’t survive the night, I couldn’t think of a better place to exit stage left than Café at Adele’s.”
