Two adult women were found dead of gunshot wounds in Voltaire Canyon west of Carson City. This morning's discovery was at around 8:30, about a half mile from nearby homes, said Carson City Sheriff Ken Furlong. Originally the pair were reported as being a Native American man and a white woman. Both deceased women are Native American, Furlong confirmed.
The Sheriff's office was called after the discovery by a homeless man in the area who was walking his dog, Furlong said. Deputies arrived and found both dead and a weapon located nearby.
A vehicle in the immediate proximity of the scene was determined to be registered to a local address, but not owned by either of the victims, Furlong would not say it is is a murder-suicide at this time and would not discuss other details surrounding the case.
"We are looking into their relationship," he said.
Although the area of the occurrence is not within the boundaries of the nearby tribal land mass, Washoe Tribal Police were called to the area to assist in the initial investigation.
The names of the victims are being withheld at this time. Anyone with information should contact the Carson City Sheriff’s Office at (775) 887-2500.
