Occupy Carson City protests and march for fair taxes on Saturday
Occupy Wall Street began their two-week march from Nov. 9-23 to Washington, D.C. to tell Congress' Deficit Super Committee that the Occupy movement is against any extension of the Bush tax cuts. An extension of those cuts, which are due to expire in 2012, as well as reducing the tax rate on the highest bracket from 35 percent to 28 percent is being suggested as part of possible negotiations in creating the deficit reduction package which has a deadline of Nov. 23.
Occupy Carson City will hold a protest and march on Saturday, Nov. 12 and Saturday Nov. 23 to support the two-week march and voice their opposition to tax cut extensions and tax decreases. Occupy Carson City participants are especially concerned about the problems cities across the country are having in providing basic services as well as the extremely unbalanced income and wealth distribution in our country which has only worsened since the Great Recession.
The Saturday and Nov. 19 protests will be from 12-3 p.m. and will include marches around the Legislature and Capitol buildings at 401 S. Carson Street with signs, flags, instruments and some costumes. Signs at the Occupy Carson City protest will include "Tax Reform Now, Uncle Sam!" and "Tax the Rich Their Fair Share!" and "Many Corps. Don't Pay Tax!"
Everyone is welcome to participate (bring a sign or flag or use one of the group's), and the group has been in close communication with law enforcement and the Nevada ACLU to avoid any problems. For First Amendment rights and Nevada protest guidelines, print the pocket guide at: http://aclunv.org/files/protest.pdf
Participants and organizers will begin to gather at Comma Coffee at 312 S. Carson Street at 11:30 p.m. before each protest. Free parking is available surrounding the café and at the Nevada State parking lots near E. 5th and S. Plaza streets.
The Saturday protests will be the group's fifth and sixth events, and they are determined to keep organizing, protesting, and collaborating with other Occupy groups in the state and around the country.
