Carson City area forecast: Clearing and cold with another storm possible Friday
Cold temperatures and some clearing will persist Monday following the snowfall early Sunday that brought a few inches to a foot of snow or more from the valley floors to the Sierra.
Well below average temperatures with dry conditions and light winds will prevail through midweek, according to the National Weather Service with Monday being the coldest day with highs in the mid-30s for Carson City, Carson Valley and Dayton areas. Temperatures will warm back up into the 40s Tuesday through Thursday.
A deep inversion with little to no wind, combined with existing snow cover will limit temperature rises Monday. Some of the areas that received more substantial snowfall Sunday — parts of Douglas, Lyon, and Alpine counties — will be even cooler Monday and Monday night.
The National Weather Service released snow totals from Sunday's storm, with Gardnerville-Ranchos seeing 14 inches, Yerington 8-12 inches, Meyers, Calif., a foot, Gardnerville 8 to 10 inches, South Lake Tahoe, 9.5 inches, Reno and Sparks, anywhere from 2 to 6 inches, and the Carson City Airport, 3.5 inches.
Later this week and into next week, a more active weather pattern is likely to return with periods of gusty winds and increased chances for rain and snow.
Forecasters say their focus remains on Friday and Saturday with another storm possible for the first half of next week. For the Friday to Saturday storm, it looks to be windy and may come in two waves, one Friday and one Saturday with snow expected in the Sierra.
Forecaster say that for now indications are the snow levels may stay in the foothills and mountains with rain in the valleys. They'll know more later in the week.
