Wood stove rebate program offered to Carson City, Douglas County residents
A voluntary wood stove change-out program available in Carson City and Douglas County has been launched by two state environmental agencies.
The program, operated through the Nevada Division of Environmental Protection and the Bureau of Air Quality Planning, provides rebates ranging between $600 and $1,000 to homeowners who remove their pre-1992 wood stoves and replace them with new, clean-burning EPA-certified wood, pellet or gas stoves installed by a licensed contractor.
The goal of the program is to reduce unhealthful fine-particulate emissions from old wood-burning stoves and to improve air quality in the Carson City and Douglas County communities, environmental officials said.
“It’s a win-win program,” explains NDEP Administrator Colleen Cripps in a news release. “Newer stoves produce more heat, use less wood and reduce fine particulate emissions that adversely affect our air quality.”
Participating local wood stove retailers will work with the University of Nevada, Reno’s Business Environmental Program to make instant rebates available to qualifying homeowners. Residents of Carson City and Douglas County need only apply at participating wood stove retailers.
The retailers will verify that the resident’s old stove qualifies, provide the instant rebate, install the new stove, remove and recycle the old stove and do all necessary paperwork. About 250 rebates will be offered during the first year of the program.
“I hope consumers act quickly; the rebates are limited and only available on a first-come, first serve basis,” said Chris Lynch, director of the UNR Business Environmental Program. “This is an exciting rebate program that will help clean the air in Carson City and Douglas County.”
