Tahoe’s own cartoon bear reeducates residents by subtle suggestion
First-time author Jake Willers was inspired to write this children’s picture book after spending the past seven years filming urban bears. He recently produced a film entitled Urban Bears: Keeping Nevada’s Bears Wild! for Washoe County Health District and has presented wildlife programs as a wildlife expert filming around the globe for the National Geographic Channel International and for UK’s Channel 5. Jake currently resides in Reno.
A message is being cunningly transmitted via Spooner the Bear, while engaging children in the richly-colored pages and neatly woven storyline, a hard-hitting message is being driven home to the parents — here’s a bear stating, from his point of view, what steps must be taken to stop his urban counterparts coming to forage in our trash cans!
This is a novel approach to a persistent dilemma, namely getting the message across to those with the power to do something about it, and this little tome does it by connecting kids and adults simultaneously. Growing up with the idea of safe trash-storage is a positive step for the future. Here’s the take-home message: WE created the problem, it’s up to US to solve it – perhaps with the aid of Spooner!
Jack Magnus in his Readers’ Favorite 5 Star book review writes, “Jake Willers’ children’s animal/picture book, Spooner the Bear, is an entertaining and informative book about ways to make co-existence between people and bears work … Spooner the Bear is most highly recommended.”
