Carson City arrests: String of residential burglaries lead to arrest of brothers
Two brothers were arrested Monday on felony burglary charges in connection with residential break-ins that began earlier this month, a Carson City sheriff’s detective said.
Kyle Canyon Curtis, 29, and Matthew Curtis, 25, were arrested after officers met with them at a Green Street Court residence. Kyle Curtis was booked on suspicion of burglary and obtaining money under false pretenses, both felonies, and misdemeanor possession of stolen property. His bail was set at $46,132.
Matthew Curtis was booked for attempted burglary and probation violation, both felonies. He’s being held on $25,000 bail for the attempted burglary charge and a no bail hold for the probation violation. Detectives are investigating additional burglaries that may be linked to the pair, according to the arrest report.
Burglaries were reported Oct. 3, Oct. 6, Oct. 14, in which jewelry was taken from residences. Officers investigating the burglaries were able to obtain surveillance video and photos which showed an older white Toyota 2 door with one of the suspects observed.
Deputies were able to run a check of the pickup that was registered to Matthew Curtis. Officers checked pawn shop data bases and learned Kyle Curtis had sold a gold necklace and pendant at a William Street pawn shop. The jewelry was identified as belonging to one of the burglary victims, the arrest report states. Kyle Curtis was arrested for suspicion of entering the pawn shop and committing burglary by selling the pawnshop stolen property, obtaining money under false pretenses.
Meanwhile, on Sunday, Oct. 16, suspect Matthew Curtis was found inside the home of a former co-worker in the 700 block of West Fourth Street. The victim told deputies the man came inside her home without a knock of consent. She said he attempted to make small talk and then left the residence.
The woman locked the door and left the residence, and then returned shortly after because she forgot something inside and found Matthew Curtis again inside her residence. She asked him what he was doing. He asked her if she had any money for cigarettes. She told the man to leave and then later called the Carson City Sheriff’s Office.
A detective made contact with victim who explained what happened and stated Matthew Curtis had been texting her after he left her home and begged her not to call the cops because he would do 10 years in prison, the arrest report states. In the text messages, Matthew Curtis admitted to going into the woman’s residence to look for money for cigarettes. He told her that he thought about stealing from her but he didn’t and that he was sorry, the arrest report states.
Detectives went to the Green Court home on Monday to speak with Matthew, who admitted entering the home with the intent to steal money to buy cigarettes. He confirmed he sent the victim text messages telling her not to call the cops and that he did not take anything but he had thought about it, according to the arrest report. He was arrested for attempted burglary and was on State of Nevada Probation supervision for possession of stolen property. Kyle Curtis was also at the residence and was arrested.
In 2013, Kyle Curtis committed a residential burglary in Carson City and Matthew sold the stolen property. One of Matthew’s conditions of probation was not to enter pawn shops. Officers located two records of Matthew recently selling jewelry in both Carson City and Reno, the arrest report states.
