South Carson Street project in final stretches as fall road work continues around Carson City

Here is the South Carson Street Project and Carson City area road report for the week Oct. 12-18, 2020. Among the construction work delays, there will be periodic closures of the intersection of 5th Street at Carson Street throughout the week as part of the South Carson Street Project.

Here is this week's South Carson Street Project road report:
— Roop Street between Industrial Park Drive and Fairview will be closed to southbound traffic only on Friday, Oct. 9, and Monday, Oct. 12 through Wednesday, Oct. 14.

— The intersection at Industrial Park Drive on Roop Street will be closed on the west access.

— South Carson Street from 5th Street to Fairview will be closed to southbound traffic. Southbound traffic will use 5th to Roop Street to Fairview as a detour, except on Monday, Oct. 12, southbound traffic will be directed to use Musser Street to access Roop Street.

— The 5th Street intersection will experience daily closures on Monday Oct. 12, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. for both west and eastbound traffic. Carson Street is open to northbound traffic.

— Frontage Road is open to two-way traffic with temporary shoulder closures.

— South Carson Street from Fairview to Clearview will be one lane in each direction around-the-clock.

Elsewhere around Carson City, closures are expected at the following locations due to road and utility work:

— Airport Road will be closed between Douglas Drive and Woodside Drive, Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 5:30 pm, for paving operations. JAC service will be on detour. Business and residential access will be allowed but limited.

— Industrial Park Drive will be closed between Roop Street and Idaho Street, all week long, all day long, for concrete placement and curing.

— Menlo Drive will be closed at the intersection of Airport Road, Monday through Saturday, 7:00 am to 5:30 pm, for paving operations. JAC service will be on detour, and bus stops along N. Lompa Lane and Menlo Drive will be closed.

— Retail Court will be closed east of College Parkway, Monday through Friday, all day. Access to the businesses will be maintained. There may also be periodic closures and detours to the multi-use path between Emerson Drive and Retail Court.

— Robinson Street will be closed to all traffic except school buses from Saliman Road to the east end, Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 6:00 pm for construction associated with new development.

— Roop Street will be closed in the southbound direction only between Fairview Drive and Industrial Park Drive, Monday through Wednesday, 7:00 am to 5:00 pm for utility work and roadway reconstruction.

— Sherman Lane will have periodic closures between Airport Road and College Parkway, Monday through Thursday, 7:00 am to 5:30 pm for replacement of the waterlines. Local access will be provided.

— Telegraph Street will be closed between S. Carson Street and Fall Street, Monday through Thursday, 7:00 am to 5:30 pm for reconstruction of the roadway and sidewalk. Periodic closures of Plaza Street may also occur. Please also use pedestrian detours for your safety.

— Viking Drive will have periodic closures between Sherman Lane and Nye Lane, Monday through Thursday, 7:00 am to 5:30 pm for replacement of the waterlines. Local access will be provided.

Lane restrictions are expected at the following locations due to road and utility work:
— 5th Street will have work occurring in the median between Roundup Road and Marsh Road, Monday through Thursday, 7:00 am to 5:30 pm.

— Airport Road will have flagger controls between US 50 and Woodside Drive, Monday through Friday, 7:00 am to 5:30 pm for utility adjustments.

— Airport Road will have narrowed and shifted lanes between Champion Street and Sherman Lane, Monday through Saturday, 7:00 am to 5:00 pm for utility work.

— Airport Road may have shoulder work between US 50 and Carmine Street, Monday through Thursday, 7:00 am to 5:00 pm for project cleanup.

College Parkway will have lane closures in the eastbound direction between Roop Street and the I-580 Interchange, Monday through Friday, 9:00 am to 3:00 pm for utility work.

— US 50 will have westbound shoulder closures at the intersection of Airport Road, Tuesday through Wednesday, 7:00 am to 5:30 pm.

— Fairview Drive will have lane restrictions and single lane closures between Carson Street and Roop Street, Monday through Thursday, 7:00 am to 5:00 pm for roadway repaving.

— Winnie Lane will have lane closures and lane shifts between N. Carson Street and Roop Street, Wednesday through Friday, 8:00 am to 5:00 pm for overhead utility work. Temporary driveway closures and access detours may occur.

On Saturday, April 20, Carson City Community Gardeners and the UNR Extension Master Gardeners came together to get the Community Garden ready for the growing season. For two hours they removed weeds, spread mulch and prepped their garden beds for the season.

In collaboration with Chartwells, the Carson City School District foodservice partner, Culinary Arts students from Ms. Tammy Borreman’s class at Carson Middle School competed in a “Discovery Kitchen Cook Off.” Similar to a mini version of the Food Network’s Iron Chef, the timed cooking competition featured teams of three students who prepared succulent dishes for a judging panel.

Six local bowlers were inducted in the third class of the Carson Country Bowling Association Hall of Fame at their annual meeting on Saturday, April 27, at HomeGrown Bowl. Carson Country is the local association of the U.S. Bowling Congress.

Camp GOTR (Girls on the Run) is coming to Carson City for the second year in a row! Camp GOTR will be a week-long, half-day summer camp from 8 AM- 12 PM at the Carson City Community Center the week of August 5th- August 9th.

Girls on the Run Sierras is a character-building program for girls in 3rd through 8th grade operating in the Reno-Tahoe area.

A number of new Junior Park Rangers received their badges as they were sworn in as part of the annual Junior Park Rangers Day in Carson City.

On April 24, 2024, at approximately 4:48 a.m., the Nevada State Police responded to a crash at the location of IR580 southbound near mile marker CC01 in Carson City, Nevada. (Near the Snyder Ave. overpass).

Each year, the Carson City Sheriff’s Office hosts an open house event as a way to connect families, deputies, non-profits and more. This year the event takes place May 11 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Douglas County officials have announced that construction will begin soon on the first phase of the Muller Parkway Project. The project aims to alleviate traffic congestion in Minden and Gardnerville, offering an alternative route to the main U.S. Route 395 through town. The decision comes as the County moves to fill its requirement to construct 2.4 miles of two-lane road by 2025.
