Carson City Chamber urges membership to vote against recreational marijuana legalization
On, Thursday, Sept. 8, the Board of Directors of the Carson City Chamber of Commerce voted to advise their members to vote against Question 2 – The Marijuana Initiative.
This decision comes after much study of the flawed initiative and the reports of the problems now being faced in Colorado and elsewhere as is continually being reported.
The Chamber does not oppose medicinal use of marijuana and fully acknowledges the two existing dispensaries and growing facility, as allowed by the Board of Supervisors, to operate in Carson City.
Citing the relatively flawed or vague provisions contained within the language of the initiative, the recreational use of the Schedule 1 drug will be a burden on the business community seeking drug-free employees to operate within the manufacturing industry where precision is key.
Gordon Gagnon, Vice President of Rubber Engineering and Development Company (REDCO) and member of the Chamber board, cites the factory’s current drug policy calls for random drug testing and those who test positive for any drug including marijuana - medicinal or recreational – can result in disciplinary action up to and including termination. Marijuana can stay within the system for a month.
The Chamber will be conducting two informational training sessions in October to advise businesses to update their personnel policies to deal with employees who use the drug. The hands-on sessions will be taught by Jo McGuire who will instruct small businesses how they can legally be compliant with Nevada law to keep the workplace safe and drug-free while avoiding liability.
The free sessions will be held on Tuesday, October 18 at 8:00 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Chamber. Space is limited. 882-1565.
