Carson City weather update: Thunderstorms developing in Western Nevada, Eastern Sierra
The National Weather Service in Reno advises that isolated to widely scattered thunderstorms have begun to develop Tuesday afternoon through the Western Nevada basin and range into Carson City. Lightning strikes were being reported throughout the area as well as rain showers in Carson City.
The strongest storms are capable of producing gusty winds in excess of 40 mph along with brief moderate to heavy rain, according to the weather service.
The storm forecast area includes Reno, Carson City, Carson Valley in Douglas County, Lyon and Mineral counties, the greater Lake Tahoe area, Mono County, Western Nevada Basin and Range including Pyramid Lake.
Most of the storms will move northwest at near 20 mph. Any lightning strikes outside of the rain cores will be capable of causing new fire starts, according to the weather service. Gusty winds ahead of the storms could also produce areas of blowing dust and briefly reduce the visibility to around 1/2 mile.
The weather service advises that if a thunderstorm develops, people should seek shelter inside a sturdy structure and stay away from windows. Hikers and campers should seek shelter in a vehicle if possible.
Stronger and wetter storms on Wednesday will produce heavy rainfall and could produce flash flooding, according to the weather service.
