Weather Service: Triple digit heat this week around Western Nevada
Temperatures will begin to heat up significantly around Carson City this week as high pressure strengthens over the Sierra and western Nevada, prompting a Heat Advisory from the National Weather Service. Highs will climb into the triple digits for lower valley locations.
The Heat Advisory is in effect from 11 a.m. Tuesday to 11 p.m. Thursday. Daytime highs will be between 100 to 110 in valley locations. Overnight lows in the 60s except for 70-75 in the Truckee Meadows and near Pyramid Lake, according to the weather service.
High temperatures around Carson City, Carson Valley and Dayton areas are, for now, projected to be in the lower 90s Sunday, upper 90s Monday, near 100 on Tuesday and 100 or more by Wednesday, according to the weather service.
With the onslaught of heat, there is a high risk of heat related illnesses for much of the population, especially those who are heat sensitive and those without effective cooling and/or adequate hydration.
The weather services advises all people to take extra precautions if working or spending time outside. When possible, reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening. Wear light weight and loose fitting clothing when possible and drink plenty of water. Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances. This is especially true during warm or hot weather when car interiors can reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.
Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency, call 911.
