Dayton burglary suspect shoots self with stolen gun while watching firearm safety video
Two people were arrested in connection with a rash of burglaries in the Dayton area during the past month with a break in the case discovered early this week when one of the suspects accidentally shot himself with a gun he allegedly stole, the Lyon County Sheriff's Office said Friday.
Over the past month the Lyon County Sheriff's Office has been investigating approximately 18 Dayton residential burglaries in the Riverboat Road, River Park, and Sutro neighborhoods.
The break came on Sunday, July 12 when the Reno Police Department responded to a gunshot wound, where Matthew Miller had accidentally shot himself with a gun while watching a Youtube video on “how to unload the firearm.” Unfortunately for Miller, the firearm was reported stolen from one of the Dayton residential burglaries.
In a joint investigation with the Reno Police Department, the Lyon County Sheriff’s Office was able to recover stolen property from many of the residential burglaries.
Miller and his accomplice, Brittany Toth were arrested and booked into the Washoe County jail. A criminal complaint has been filed by the Lyon County District Attorney’s Office against Toth for seven counts of burglary and two counts of firearm grand larceny. A similar complaint is expected to be filed by the DA’s office early next week again Miller, who is currently a felony fugitive from California for burglary charges.
Due to the amount of recovered stolen property, a victim’s viewing will be scheduled in the upcoming weeks. Since the arrest of Miller and Toth, the burglaries in the Dayton area seem to have ceased.
Investigators believe there may be more victims connected with this case that have not yet stepped forward.
