Carson City area weather: Potential for thunderstorms then hot and breezy heading into weekend
With thunderstorms developing well to the south of Carson City earlier this afternoon, the National Weather Service is advising storms remain a possibility in the region into Thursday evening.
There is a Flash Flood Watch until 8 p.m. Thursday evening for southern Lyon and Mineral counties, and Mono County in California. Scattered thunderstorms will develop this afternoon with an enhanced risk of flash flooding. The storms will be slow moving and capable of producing up to 2 inches of rain in a short period of time.
The highest risk areas will be near recent burn scars such as Upper Colony and Boot where debris flows or rock slides may occur. Other areas at high risk are those with steep, rocky terrain.
Earlier Thursday, Doppler radar was tracking developing thunderstorms across western Nevada into northeast California. Storms will continue into early evening with areas south of Interstate 80 most favored.
These storms may produce sudden wind shifts in outflow boundaries with gusts between 50-60 mph. Plan for areas of heavy rain, cloud to ground lightning and hail. While most storms may produce only small pea sized hail, some stronger storms could produce hail around an inch in diameter. Areas of blowing dust will be possible from strong outflow boundaries.
During a thunderstorm, seek shelter inside a sturdy structure and stay away from windows. Hikers and campers should seek shelter in a vehicle if possible.
Meanwhile, a forecast of gusty winds and low humidity has prompted a Fire Weather Watch in effect Saturday afternoon into Sunday evening for western Nevada, including Carson City, Carson Valley, Lyon and Washoe counties, as well as the Sierra Front and portions of west-central Nevada.
Temperatures around Carson City, Carson Valley and Lyon County will be in the mid to upper 90s Friday and Saturday, with a cool down Sunday and Monday.
Westerly winds 15 to 20 mph with gusts around 35 mph Saturday with gusts up to 45 mph on Sunday. Humidity is expected to be between 5 and 15 percent in the region.
Gusts could be particularly dangerous creating conditions for explosive rates of fire spread. The combination of gusty winds and low humidity can cause fire to rapidly grow in size and intensity before first responders can contain them. Check back for updates as the weather service may issue a Red Flag Warning as the weekend nears.
