Nevada set to receive $1.25 billion from coronavirus relief fund
The State of Nevada is set to receive a total of $1.25 billion in support from the Coronavirus Relief Fund set up through the U.S. Department of Treasury. Congressman Mark Amodei, NV-02, made the announcement via a news release Monday.
“It’s encouraging to see more support headed our way. Today’s news follows last week’s allocation of $241 million for Nevada’s hospitals and health care providers and an additional $5 million in funding to help the State manage administrative costs associated with the recent surge in unemployment claims," said Amodei. "With Nevada’s health care professionals and state and local partners currently exhausting all energy and resources to combat this pandemic, I’m incredibly grateful to Treasury officials for acting swiftly to deliver this much-needed relief a week ahead of schedule.”
The CARES Act established the $150 billion Coronavirus Relief Fund. On April 13, 2020, Treasury announced its launch of a web portal to allow eligible State, local, and tribal governments to receive payments to help offset the costs of their response efforts. Once registered through this portal, States, territories, and the District of Columbia will promptly receive half of the funds allocated to them pursuant to the CARES Act. This will fast-track the availability of $71 billion of the Fund to meet immediate cash flow needs. The remaining balance of the Fund will be paid no later than April 24, 2020.
The CARES Act requires that payments from the Coronavirus Relief Fund only be used to cover expenses that:
— Are necessary expenditures incurred due to the public health emergency with respect to COVID–19;
— Were not accounted for in the budget most recently approved as of March 27, 2020 (date of enactment of the CARES Act) for the State or government; and
— Were incurred during the period that begins on March 1, 2020 and ends on December 30, 2020.
Also noteworthy, of the money, Nevada has received $27.8 million in rural transit relief funding following Congress’ passage of the CARES Act. This is in addition to transit funding dedicated to the state’s metropolitan transit services.
The Federal Transit Administration recently announced appropriations of $25 billion in national transit relief funding. This includes $1.8 billion to rural transit under the Federal Grant Transportation Funds for Rural Areas (5311 funds). In Nevada, those rural transit funds are administered by the Nevada Department of Transportation.
