Carson Baseball Recap: Senators' offense skids in 4-2 loss to McQueen
After a blowout victory against North Valleys, the Carson High Senators looked to continue their win streak and rise up in the standings as they faced off against the McQueen Lancers at home Wednesday in Carson City.
McQueen would be a tough obstacle to overcome for Carson, as the Lancers struck first with an RBI double from Nelson Padilla, putting them up 1-0 heading into the bottom half of the first inning. For the Senators, Abel Carter answered with an RBI single of his own to tie the game at 1 apiece to end the first inning of play.
Both offenses struggled to get a rhythm going throughout the 2nd and 3rd innings, as starting pitchers Jared Barnard (Carson) and Drew Clark (McQueen) kept the bases empty with tremendous pitching and defense behind them.
With the score still knotted 1-1, Matt Farmen's RBI single with runners on 1st and 2nd put the Lancers back up 2-1 in the 4th with the game heading into the late innings.
Barnard struck out the next 2 batters to end the inning. Clark's stellar arm kept the Carson offense puzzled at the plate, as a quick 1,2,3 bottom of the 4th inning put the Lancers in the driver's seat.
McQueen continued to pile on to the lead, as a 2 run 5th inning highlighted by Jaker Phillips' solo home run set them up with a commanding 4-1 lead. With only 2 innings left to play, Jesse Lopez set the Senators up with a leadoff double in the 6th inning.
Carter answered the favor by smacking his 2nd RBI of the game that trimmed the Lancer lead to just 2 runs making the score 4-2 heading into the final inning of play. Cole McDannald came in relief during the top of the 7th, and pitched a shutout inning.
With a final half inning left to play, a Carson comeback wasn't in sight as the Senators lost to McQueen 4-2.
After the game, coach Brian Manoukian gave his thoughts on the tough loss.
"The great thing about baseball is that there is lots of games left and you don't have time to dwell on a loss," Manoukian said. "So we will get back to practice and work on the things that need to be done, anything can happen in baseball so we will see what happens."
Drew Clark of McQueen pitched a complete 7 innings, with 3 strikeouts and only 2 earned runs in the win for the Lancers.
For Carson, Jared Barnard pitched a full 5 innings with 7 strikeouts, giving up 4 earned runs on 7 hits and 5 walks.
Jesse Lopez went 2 for 4 with a single and double. Abel Carter continued his hot streak at the plate going 2 for 3 with 2 hits and 2 RBI's. Bryce Moyle and Kahle Good each had 1 hit. With this loss Carson fell to 10-9 overall and 5-6 in leauge play, look for the Senators to rebound as they face off against McQueen Saturday, April 15.
