Chamber to talk trash at February Soup’s On!
What to do with and how to manage our ever growing trash problem will be the topic of conversation at the Carson City Chamber Soup’s On! luncheon scheduled at Gold Dust West on Wednesday, Feb. 27 at 11:30 a.m.
Speakers from Waste Management, the City’s trash hauler, will provide insight into how trash is processed from the time of pick up to the disposal at the Carson City Landfill. As Carson City continues to grow, so does the trash problem. How long can the current landfill handle the growth?
Current statistics show the United States generates approximately 230 million tons of trash annually or 4.6 pounds per person per day. These are staggering figures. Some profess we could recycle more than 70 percent of today’s landfill waste.
With our continued emphasis on consumerism, it’s easy to “throw away” than to fix or recycle. While some are avid recyclers, many prefer to just discard. Quoting evangelist Myles Munroe, “We live in a disposable ‘cast-off and throw-away’ society that has largely lost any real sense of permanence. Ours is a world of expiration dates, limited shelf life, and planned obsolescence. Nothing is absolute.”
Waste Management has contracted with the City to provide single stream recycling beginning in July.
Tickets include lunch and can be obtained by calling the Chamber at 882-1565 or going here.
