Carson City arrest log: Man released from jail, arrested on felony burglary charge

A 67-year-old Carson City man was arrested Monday on felony suspicion of auto burglary after allegedly stealing a tool box from the back of a truck in the 400 block of Pratt Street, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Darrell Fisher also faces a misdemeanor charge of petit larceny after allegedly stealing a bicycle from a North Roop Street residence. He allegedly committed the crimes within an hour after being released from Carson City Jail, according to the arrest report.

He was also questioned about a van fire that happened while he was in the area, officers said. The fire remains under investigation and it is believed to have been deliberately set.

Officers responded to the 500 block of Roop Street at 9:34 p.m. regarding theft of a bicycle. The owner of the bike advised he saw Fisher steal it from his front porch. The owner chased the man down and recovered the bike near the 700 block of North Roop.

Officers located Fisher who by then was towing a large green trash can with several items inside. Officer spoke with the man and looked inside the can which contained a yellow and black tool box with various hand tools. The trash can had a Roop Street address painted on its side.

At first Fisher advised the trash can was his, then he said he found it discarded by a nearby dumpster. The officer asked the man to show him where he located the items and Fisher took him to the back side of an office complex. He pointed to the south far end of a parking lot, indicating where he located the garbage can.

Right next to the dumpster was a large passenger van on fire. Officers called the Carson City Fire Department. The fully engulfed van was destroyed.

Officers read Fisher his Miranda rights and questioned him about the fire. He confirmed he was looking for recyclable trash in the dumpster near the van. He then hung his head and began signing church hymns to avoid questions, the arrest report states.

A deputy made contact with a resident in the 500 block of North Roop who took possession of his garbage can. He said he did not see the suspect take it and did not know who the tool box belonged to, the arrest report states.

Officers then spoke with the victim of the bike theft who said he caught Fisher removing several bungee cords from his bike which had been secured to a fence. The bike owner ran outside as Fisher was walking away with the bike, the arrest report states.

After recovering the bike, the owner said he saw the suspect pick up the black and yellow tool box and continued walking northbound on Roop Street. Fisher apologized to the bike owner for stealing his bike, acknowledging that he did give the bike back when the owner came after him, the arrest report states.

A deputy met with a victim in the 400 block of Pratt Avenue who advised he was the victim of a vehicle burglary and positively identified his black and yellow tool box. Fisher was asked about the tool box in which he admitted to stealing it from the back of the truck. He apologized to the owner.

Officers questioned the man further about the vehicle fire. Fisher would not admit responsibility for the blaze. The fire is being investigated as arson. Fisher was taken into custody for vehicle burglary and petit larceny. Bail: $20,387.
