Eyes on Carson City: Let it snow and snow and snow...
With more than six inches on the ground already in places around Carson City, the area is about to get hit again with an even stronger winter storm very early Sunday morning through Monday morning.
The National Weather Service in Reno has put a winter storm warning in place for all of Northwestern Nevada, including the lower valleys such as Carson City, which could see as much as 18 inches of new snow on top of what is already on the ground.
So far as of Sunday morning, it has been a combination of rain and snow showers. Here's what the weather service says as of around 9:40 a.m.
For western Nevada, a break between the two waves of the storm is allowing improving road conditions below around 5,000 feet for many locations. However, as the cold sector of the storm crosses the Sierra this afternoon, moderate to heavy snow rates should develop. The next wave should be reaching the Highway 395/Interstate 580 corridor around 4 pm and then spreading across western NV this evening. This will bring worsening visibilities across west NV after 4 pm. The Winter Storm Warning has been updated to reflect these conditions.
Travel is not advised during the snowstorm, which could reach blizzard severity at times Sunday. Winds are also expected to pick up significantly, increasing the risk of blow and drifting snow with dangerous whiteout conditions.
Carson City Public Works is expected to be very busy plowing streets and roads in Carson City trying to keep up with the snowfall, while emergency management operations are poised in the event weather-related situations arise around the Nevada state capital.
To stay current on city operations during the storm, visit its municipal web site at www.carson.org or the city's government Facebook page here. Carson City School District operations could be impacted as the storm warning is in effect until early Monday morning. Visit www.carsoncityschools.com for updates on potential school delays or closures.
