Carson City Community Youth Step Up
It seems appropriate at this time of year we acknowledge the amazing young people in our community.
In October, Partnership Carson City hosted a large medical event at Carson High School. Over a thousand people including our seniors, children and the “working poor” received extensive dental, vision and medical services. This was a huge undertaking, requiring the assistance of over 380 volunteers for three days. A good portion of these volunteers were our teens:
• The Health Occupations Students of America Club, and the One Up! Club promoting healthy lifestyles were on deck all three days checking people into the event, helping then navigate from one area to another, translating questions for the medical and dental professionals and their patients, and holding patients’ hands.
• Our Carson High Culinary Team students and their instructor, Penny Reynolds prepared an amazing lunch for the volunteers all three days.
• The Western Nevada College baseball and softball teams were on hand to set up the entire event – a significant undertaking needing all of their muscle power.
• Finally, I was approached by many of our youth who passed by, saw they event in progress and wanted to help.
It is these young people who represent the vast majority of our teens in Carson City. They are the ones who define us as a community. I could not be more proud of them, and I am humbled by their spirit of goodwill and compassion for others.
