Meet Maurice, Carson City's Constitutionalist! (opinion)
On Maurice White,
The deceitful thing about words is that they can have multiple meanings. Words take on connotations because of the way people use them. In that sense, yes, a “constitutionalist” could be considered anyone who advocates the defense and protection of the American Constitution.
But that would include everyone from the Southern Poverty Law Center and the Church Of Scientology!
In other words, the use of the word “constitutionalist” has often meant something other than simply people who advocate following the Constitution.
Oklahoma City Bomber Timothy McVeigh considered himself to be a “constitutionalist.”
In the 1980s, David Trochmann, co-founder of the Militia of Montana, also called himself a “constitutionalist” claiming among other things, that requiring to have a license to drive a car was “unconstitutional.”
Other “constitutionals” right here in Nevada have argued that governmental officials were illegally holding office because they hadn’t said, “so help me God" when being sworn in.
Other Nevada “constitutionalists” argue that the 14th Amendment was never officially approved or that the federal income tax was never legally authorized.
The ambiguous word, “constitutionalist,” is now the central and political marketing scam offered by two time political has-been and loser, Maurice White, who is, once again running for a position on the Carson City Board of Supervisors.
White quotes one of our Founding Fathers, James Madison, as the foundation for his candidacy:
“From THE PAPERS OF JAMES MADISON: “In all political societies, different interests and parties arise out of the nature of things, and the great art of politicians lies in making them checks and balances to each other.”
Maurice White continues:
“As for me, I am a Constitutionalist registered as a Republican. When elected I will, at each issue presented, consider what the founders would do in this case. The founder’s philosophies and theories created our Constitution and are nearly perfect for today’s issues. It is of utmost importance that we return to a Constitutional Government even at the local level. Remember the second part of the Madison quote, “…the great art of politicians lies in making them checks and balances to each other.” Indeed our community needs a diverse and balanced Board of Supervisors.”
James Madison also said the following:
“What influence, in fact, have ecclesiastical establishments had on society? In some instances they have been seen to erect a spiritual tyranny on the ruins of the civil authority; on many instances they have been seen upholding the thrones of political tyranny; in no instance have they been the guardians of the liberties of the people… A just government, instituted to secure and perpetuate it, needs them not.” –James Madison, A Memorial and Remonstrance, 1785.
“During almost fifteen centuries has the legal establishment of Christianity been on trial. What has been its fruits? More or less, in all places, pride and indolence in the clergy; ignorance and servility in the laity; in both, superstition, bigotry and persecution.” –James Madison, A Memorial and Remonstrance.
