Affordable housing the topic at Democratic luncheon
Featured speaker at Monday's Democratic luncheon will be Sarah Adler, Principal at Silver State Government Relations. She will speak on behalf of the Nevada Housing Coalition, a group that works with legislators on policy solutions that address both the shortage of affordable and supportive housing and access to existing housing.
Affordable housing is defined by the U.S. Department of Housing & Urban Development as “Housing for which the occupants are paying no more than 30% of his or her income for gross housing costs.”
Supportive housing is a combination of housing and services intended to be a cost-effective way of helping people live more stable, productive lives. It works well for those who face complex challenges — individuals and families confronted with homelessness who also have very low incomes and/or serious, persistent issues that may include substance use disorders, mental health issues, HIV/AIDS, chronic diseases, diverse disabilities (e.g., intellectual disabilities, mobility or sensory impairments) or other serious challenges to stable housing.
Sarah Adler holds a Bachelor of Arts degree in Political Science and Government from Williams College in Williamstown, Massachusetts, and a Master of Public Administration and Policy from the University of Nevada, Reno. She was Nevada state director for rural development at the U.S. Department of Agriculture during the Clinton and Obama administrations. She has also served as a grants and special projects manager for the Carson City School District, and was project manager for SafeVoice, the school safety and student well-being tipline at the Nevada Department of Education.
Sponsored by the Democratic Men's Committee, this event is scheduled for 1:00 PM on Monday, February 20th, and can be attended either in person at Black Bear Diner, inside Max Casino, or online via Zoom. Adler's presentation will begin after all the lunch orders have been taken, around 1:30. Those wishing to be on distribution for luncheon Zoom links should contact Rich Dunn at richdunn@aol.com.
