Brewery revival in Virginia City celebrated with anniversary
Starting a brewery from scratch in a building dating back to the mid-1800s is not without its challenges, unless as the saying goes, your vision is bigger than any obstacle. Virginia City Brewery and Taphouse, celebrating its anniversary, is fueled by a vision to bring brewing back a town with deep roots in the craft: Virginia City, Nevada.
A tremendous investment and restoration brought brewing back to the Comstock and has generated a successful year of 10 craft brews on tap and available at more than 20 locations in northern Nevada. The celebration for the milestone takes place March 5, 2016 starting at 11 a.m. at the brewery, 62 North C Street in Virginia City.
The Virginia City Brewery and Taphouse follows a long line of historical brewers in the small mining town. 1860 saw the first brewery in the state, Carson City Brewing Company. After this brewery opened, several other local Virginia City breweries called the town home from the mid-1860s through the early 1900s. Fast forward many decades and the Virginia City Brewery and Taphouse makes it mark as the first brewery to operate in this historic town since 1995.
“This is an opportunity for us to share our product with the larger Reno-Tahoe community and let folks know what we have to offer here in Virginia City,” Kurt Holt, Managing Partner of Virginia City Brewery and Taphouse, said. “We’re brewing here like they were in the late 1800s. It’s a great way to feel connected to the history while bringing an experience to today’s patrons that is something we’re all very proud of. The history is what drew us here, and it’s the opportunity that has us excited for our next phase.”
Brewer Adam Lundy brings his numerous years of experience brewing traditional American Craft Style beers to the Virginia City Brewery and Taphouse. His expertise coupled with the brewery’s appetite for diverse flavors is a winning combination resulting in beers that are flavorful and distinct.
The anniversary party showcases the taphouses’ fan favorite brews and a few new ones. With craft brew names coming from the mining stories of the past, look for brews such as the 601 IPA, YellowJacket Honey Pale Ale, C Street Wheat, Marlette Red, Dirty Mucker Stout, Silver State Double IPA and Steampunk Extra Pale Ale.
Opened in March 2015, Virginia City Brewery and Taphouse is the first operating brewery in Virginia City since 1995. Originated by three longtime residents of the Carson City and Reno area, the taphouse serves up cold craft brews fitting of the historical brewery roots on the Comstock.
