Nevada businesses and destinations attending the Governor’s Conference on Tourism, Oct. 27-29, will have the opportunity to meet with nearly 40 tour operators, receptive operators, wholesalers, and airlines from around the world at the conference’s ever-popular sales marketplace.

It’s Hunting Season! Yesterday there were 13 deer in my yard. Do you know what that means? It’s hunting season. Here in Northern Nevada we have five seasons, the normal four plus a special one; when an outdoor workout means climbing hills in search of four footed animals with “racks.”

Many commemorative pieces have been created in the past year in celebration of Nevada’s 150th Anniversary of Statehood but the Sesquicentennial Saddle, a legacy project, showcases craftsmanship from one of the oldest professions. Leather and saddle craftsman Armondo Delgado, of J.M. Capriola Co., spent roughly 600 hours hand crafting the one of a kind saddle and Nevada silversmith Mark Dahl, designed and created the silver work.

Dog lovers and their pooches by the dozens turned out Saturday for the third annual 5K9 run and walk at River View Park in Carson City.

The event was a fundraiser for the Carson Animal Services Initiative, also known as CASI, which brought out canines that ranged from the yipping pint-sized and standard to those with muscle mass and brawn that packed hearty barks. Christy Works was the winner with her dog Shags.

This week on Women to Women is Jo Etta Brown, executive vice president of the Alliance for Retired Americans.

A Carson City couple have made a commitment to take on the toughest job they're destined to ever love. Warren and Anita Shaul have been accepted into the Peace Corps and will begin work in Nicaragua this month as volunteers.

Warren Shaul says he was motivated to join the Peace Corps because when he has traveled, he enjoyed experiences where he had the opportunity to stay in one place and build friendships with the people he worked and lived with.

Sales of the third Nevada Sesquicentennial medallion will end Aug. 26, 2014 at 5 p.m. The medallion is the third in the series of four being produced throughout the year.

The third medallion features some of the Silver State’s legendary landmarks including the “Welcome to Fabulous Las Vegas” sign, the Reno Arch and Wendover Will. Last month, Lt. Gov. and Nevada 150 Chairman Brian Krolicki invited Nevada students to participate in choosing the design. Over 200 classes participated in the contest, receiving close to 5,000 total votes.

When visiting foreign countries, you can communicate knowing 30 basic words, facial expressions and hand movements including pointing. In Nevada when you hear, “We don’t do it like that in California,” do you have a knee jerk reaction? Be a great visitor. Learn how they do it in your host country. Taste foods you’ve never dreamed of tasting. Become the Marco Polo of cultural experiences.

University of Nevada Cooperative Extension will present six “Grow Your Own, Nevada!” classes at seven locations across northern Nevada to provide information to homeowners, gardeners, landscapers and farmers who want their lawns to survive and thrive in a desert climate.

“Recurring droughts are a fact of life for Nevadans,” Cooperative Extension Horticulture Specialist Heidi Kratsch said. “This program will teach homeowners how to create and care for landscapes that are resilient to drought events, yet outstandingly beautiful. Yes, it is possible.”

Tickets are on sale now for northern Nevada’s premier farm-to-fork event, Tractors & Truffles, Saturday, Sept. 13. Enjoy a day of farm tours and a hosted lunch, along with a late afternoon cocktail hour followed by a multi-course dinner prepared on-site in Fallon’s beautiful Oats Park. Using northern Nevada’s freshest harvest from local farms and ranches, Chef Ryan Scott is back for an encore performance.

The League to Save Lake Tahoe hosted a Stewards of Stormwater event Thursday, Aug. 7 in Incline Village in partnership with Tahoe Family Solutions’ Camp Explore program, IVGID, the Nevada Tahoe Conservation District, and Washoe County, Nevada.

More than 50 kids from Tahoe Family Solutions along with other volunteers helped place 41 metal markers on storm drains that lead to Lake Tahoe and picked up 40 pounds of litter on the streets.

FALLON, Nev. – Prepare your favorite Dutch Oven recipes and see how you stack up to other Dutch Oven enthusiast. Participants may compete in teams or individually and are allowed unlimited entries in four categories: bread, dessert, main/dish/meat, and side dish/vegetable.

The fourth graders worked at the computer screens for hours, fingers dancing over the keyboard and figures on the screen spinning, growing and changing colors. And, their parents were happy. The students weren’t playing games; they were designing and building things like a whistle, buildings, hot air balloon, cars, DNA models, bracelets, airplanes and more, using a 3-D modeling and CAD design program.

UPDATE: Thursday at 11 a.m., the Wells Fargo coach will be delivering Governor Brian Sandoval, Carson City Mayor Robert Crowell and Wells Fargo Regional Manager Chad Osorno and Wells Fargo Northern Nevada Area Manager Sean French to Fuji Park in south Carson City to preside over the official opening and ribbon cutting of Carson City’s contribution to the NV150 Anniversary event, the NV150Fair.

The NV150Fair will feature over 90 4-H and Future Farmers of America kids from around the region showcasing their animals and farm knowledge.

Several days ago, my dad and I had a conversation. Our conversation started like most other people start theirs. He expressed his thoughts and concerns and I parried back with mine. At the end of the day we were both frustrated with the whole conversation. It was a stalemate. He didn’t understand me and I didn’t understand him. Which seems very familiar with some of the conversations I’ve had with my wife.

How can two people in the same room, speaking the same language, not understand each other? How many conversations like that, have you had?

This week’s Women to Women is with Diane Hansen, Chief Inspiration Officer of What Works Coaching, a coaching firm that has helped people worldwide with their businesses, careers, mindsets, and profit margins. The Texas native received her bachelor’s degree from California State University-San Bernardino College of Business and Public Administration respectively.

As we countdown to the NV150 Fair in Carson City, we want to honor the kids that make the fair so very special. These are the kids who raise the animals so lovingly, yet are willing to release them for sale. These are the kids now bringing attention to the farm-to-table movement and are learning the value of a job well done.

As the late Whitney Houston sang, “I believe children are our future. Teach them well and let them lead the way.”
4-H clubs were formed to teach our children the importance of agriculture and to learn new ways to better farm or raise their animals.

India is a 2 year-old Belgian Malinois. In May she took 2nd and earned high scoring female at the Mondioring National Championships, earning her a spot at the world cup in Italy this October. Her owner and handler, Michon Mills, says she never intended for India to be a competition dog.

New York Times author Novella Carpenter will be at the 3rd and Curry Street downtown Carson City Farmer’s Market on July 19 at 11 a.m. to chat about her bestselling memoir, Farm City: The Education of an Urban Farmer.

Carpenter and northern Nevada agriculture expert Mark O’Farrell, of Hungry Mother Organics, are set to engage in a kitchen-table visit. Under a large tent, with seats for 100, the conversation will be led by northern Nevada’s KTVN news anchor Erin Breen. The special event is aimed at raising awareness about the vital role farmers play in our lives.

Visiting a new place, even after a lot of planning, can be disorienting. Must-see attractions and the best locals-favorite eateries get left off the vacation schedule if you just don’t know what’s out there or where to look.

Carson City has fixed it so that anyone who comes to town — or lives in the area — can find nearly every restaurant, hotel, motel, RV park, museum, hiking trail, sports tournament, tourist attraction, special event, fitness center, fishing stream and shopping center in seconds.

Carson Now focuses on local news, but for eight days next spring, we will expand our view all the way to China.

In cooperation with the Carson City Chamber of Commerce, I will be embarking on a tour of China with a group of Carson City residents and businesspeople on April 7-15, 2015.

The contest is designed around summer visitors to Nevada's capital city and beating the heat. Participants have a chance to win lodging, dining and entertainment passes, rodeo tickets and more.

Carson City was recently recognized nationally as the fastest warming city in the United States. To remind the world that we do not live in a dry, barren, hot wasteland Visit Carson City is hosting a “Beat The Heat” photo contest on Facebook.

With all the flavorings of the Old West, the Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City will showcase several of its trains for the July 4 weekend.

It's living history on the rails when steam locomotives V&T No. 25 and the famous Inyo will operate along with the historic, self-propelled McKeen motor car Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Rides will be available behind the 25 and on the McKeen car every 45 minutes from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

This week's It's Your City is with Father Jeff Paul, director of St. Peter's Episcopal Church in Carson City. Founded by James Nye and Henry Yerington, St. Peters is often consider the jewel of the Carson City Historic District. The congregation began in 1863 during the Civil War, celebrating its 150th anniversary last year.

The Tahoe Fund has partnered with Nevada State Parks to offer free access July 12 to Sand Harbor, Cave Rock and Spooner Lake to current owners of Lake Tahoe license plates. The event is designed as a gesture of appreciation to those who support Lake Tahoe with the purchase of license plates.

“We are thankful to the thousands of people who choose to buy and renew their Tahoe license plates,” said Jay Howard of Nevada State Parks. “Our Lake Tahoe parks benefit greatly from those funds, with beach improvements, watershed restoration work, and new hiking trails.”

This week's Women to Women features Rebecca Ortiz, an 18-year-old Carson High School graduate. Rebecca plans on attending University of Nevada, Reno for premedical studies this September.

She is the youngest woman ever to be interviewed on Women to Women, but it is the encompassing aspect of her senior high graduation project that brought her into local and statewide attention.
