Thank you for making The 1st Annual Moundhouse Christmas Festival a success

The Outdoor Toy Store in Moundhouse held its first Community Christmas Festival. We wanted to thank all those who helped make it such a success.

The money from the raffle items went to The Ron Woods Family Center and the cans of food that were donated are going to The Dayton Food Pantry. Next year we have promises from other local businesses to help out and spread much needed donations and Christmas cheer to an area that is largely forgotten.

Cooperative Extension ‘Great Ideas From Growers’ peer-mentoring begins

RENO, Nev. – Beginning Jan. 13, University of Nevada Cooperative Extension will offer five “Great Ideas From Growers” sessions, where small farm producers from across the state can share their knowledge and experiences to help each other improve their businesses.

“This provides an opportunity for owners of small, specialized farms to learn from others’ experiences” said Extension Educator Holly Gatzke, who will lead the sessions.

Women to Women Nevada kicks off third year of programming with guest Dana Fruend

Women to Women Nevada welcomes Dana Fruend to this week's program. Dana is a dynamic redhead of Irish descent who has boundless energies and super organizational skills. Dana heads up the marketing office at the Horseshoe Club Casino right here in Carson City, Nev. She is also the publisher of the Carson Quarterly, a publication of Agency 56, an enhanced interactive communication tool.

Women to Women Nevada repeat features education director of Carson City Symphony

This week's Women to Women Nevada is a repeat show from October. Host Carol Paz interviews Sue Jesch, Education Director of the Carson City Symphony as well as a private violin and viola instructor.

Jesch has taught violin and viola and performed professionally for more than 30 years. She began playing in the Carson City Symphony when she moved to Nevada in 2004 and is currently Concertmaster and Education Director.

Sunset Rotary Club of Carson City donates dictionaries to promote literacy

For the 13th year, the Sunset Rotary Club of Carson City will donate dictionaries to each third grade student in Carson City and Dayton.

The club’s Rotarians will go to each elementary school and present a dictionary to the area’s 624 students in an effort to encourage literacy and to educate our community of the goals of rotary locally.

The Sunset Rotary Club of Carson City is a community service organization that does various projects within the carson city and dayton areas as well as around the world. Education is one of Rotary International’s areas of focus.

This week's Women to Women Nevada interview is with self defense instructor Debra May of APEX SCF. As an instructor, she specializes in "stay alive" training in areas of self protection and protection of others in most any life threatening circumstance including active shooter scenarios. Debra covers many subjects in this interview including parking lot safety.

Winning essays on American citizenship to be recognized by Carson City school board Tuesday

Several students from the Carson City School District will be recognized Tuesday for their submissions to the 2013-2014 American Citizen Essay Contest.
The students will be honored beginning at 7 p.m. Tuesday in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center.

Among the winners are Vidhi Pandit, a 5th grader at Bordewich Bray Elementary School. She submitted the winning elementary school essay below that was passed to Carson Now by her proud parents, Girish and Dr. Su Pandit of Carson City.

Student youth group gives Carson City Grocery Outlet a helping hand

Grocery Outlet in Carson City was given a helping hand this week when youth members of Carson River Ward of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints teamed up to help staff cleanup after the store closed. The youth group meets weekly to learn, have fun and often to provide community service.

Carson City's Karen Abowd, Mary Fischer honored with Girl Scouts of Sierra Nevada Triumphant Award

Carson City residents Karen Abowd and Mary Fischer, will be honored tonight at The Atlantis Hotel and Casino, when they receive the Girl Scouts of the Sierra Nevada’s 2013 TRIUMPHANT Awards.

Karen Abowd will receive the Environmental Leader award for her work with The Greenhouse Project, a non-profit community greenhouse located on Carson High School’s campus that teaches sustainability and new agricultural principals and produces food for the community. Mary Fischer will receive the Community Service award for her work with Gardeners Reclaiming Our Waysides (G.R.O.W.), a non-profit she founded in 1997 with the purpose of beautifying area roadways using landscaping and art.

Have you seen this dog? Carson City family searches for Labrador missing since Friday

A Carson City family is searching for their dog and need help. Bosco is a full grown black male lab. He has a white stripe of fur on his chest and some white around his mouth and chin. See the above photo.

He has a blue collar with tags. He went missing on Friday night, Nov. 8, in the housing unit behind the 7-Eleven on the northeast end of Carson City.

Women to Women Nevada discusses eating disorders with Elizabeth Tully

This week's Women to Women Nevada features guest Elizabeth Tully who heads up the Women's Workshop for Compulsive Eating, Dieting, and Exercising.

She tells host Carol Paz her compelling story of how she grew up a compulsive eater, identifying it later in life. Now she dedicates herself to helping people with eating disorders.

Carson City Raiders Booster annual fundraiser and auction this Sunday at Carson Lanes

The Carson City Raiders Booster Club's annual fundraiser and auction is this coming Sunday, Nov. 10 from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Carson Lanes Eleventh Frame Lounge, 4600 Snyder Avenue.

All proceeds from this fundraiser will be used to purchase Christmas gifts for 20 homebound seniors in the community (our list of seniors and their modest wish lists are supplied to us by the Meals on Wheels program).

Each year our members shop, wrap, deliver and visit each home bound senior on our list. It's always a heart-warming experience to help make these seniors' holidays more merrier.

Women to Women Nevada with Sue Jesch

Sue Jesch is the Education Director of the Carson City Symphony and an amazing private violin and viola instructor. She has taught violin and viola and performed professionally for more than 30 years. She began playing in the Carson City Symphony when she moved to Nevada in 2004.

She became founding director of the Symphony’s successful Strings in the Schools and Strings in the Summer programs in 2005. She is recipient of the 2011 Nevada Governor’s Arts Award for Leadership in Arts Education.

No tricks this Halloween: Carson City celebrates Beggars' Night on Oct. 31

Treat or treating in Carson City will be held on Halloween night, Thursday, Oct. 31. Just like it is celebrated throughout the country.

If you're a Carson City resident, the question as to when Beggar's Night falls on isn't a dumb one to wonder or ask since wrenches have been thrown into the mix every few years due to Nevada Day festivities.

Because Nevada Day sometimes falls on Oct. 31, there have been instances where the annual trick or treating ritual in Carson City has been moved up or down the calendar.

Children's book writer Elizabeth "Liz" Ann Patterson is this week's guest on Women to Women Nevada.

Patterson, a Carson City Support Services Specialist, has penned a series of six children's fantasy and adventure books "Bonners Fairy." High Sierra Brewing Co. wins gold medal at the Great American Beer Festival

High Sierra Brewing Co., in Carson City took home a gold medal at the 2013 Great American Beer Festival competition held recently in Denver.

Presented by the Brewers Association, GABF is the largest national beer competition that recognizes the most outstanding beers produced in the United States. The top three winners in the competition’s 84 beer-style categories were announced Oct. 12 at the Great American Beer Festival awards ceremony held at the Colorado Convention Center in Denver, Colo.

Historic steam train rides this weekend in Carson City at Nevada Railroad Museum

The Nevada State Railroad Museum in Carson City will offer a special run of the famous V&T Steam Locomotive No. 25 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. this weekend, Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 12-13.

Normally operated only on summer holiday weekends and for Santa Train, the historic and picturesque locomotive will pull the train, giving visitors a rare opportunity to ride the rails and photograph the equipment in fall splendor.
