UNR statisticians play 'Moneyball' to accurately predict how weather impacts baseball

As Major League Baseball heads into the post season, a study completed at the University of Nevada, Reno offers insight into how weather and, more specifically, temperature may impact teams’ performance. The published research project, “The Impact of Temperature on Major League Baseball,” applies statistical data analysis to determine how temperature plays a role in the MLB.

NHP: Traffic violations, accidents down during Street Vibrations motorcycle rally

The 2014 annual Street Vibrations motorcycle officially came to a close on Sunday Sept. 28. Organizers expected between 50,000 and 100,000 participants. We do have a definitive number of participants but know that there was a phenomenal increase in highway traffic. Over the 4-day event that lasted from Thursday through Sunday, local residents saw an influx of motorcycle riders from all over the U.S.

Carson City sheriff's arrest log for Tuesday

A Carson City man was arrested Monday on a felony home invasion charge after he allegedly pushed through the front door of a residence, entering the home without permission, a Carson City sheriff’s deputy said.

Chris Kaecker, 26, is being held on $33,000 bail. He also faces a gross misdemeanor charge of domestic battery and a misdemeanor charge of being arrested while on probation.

Campers at Meeks Bay, Fallen Leaf required to use food lockers and dumpsters

Visitors to Fallen Leaf and Meeks Bay campgrounds at Lake Tahoe must put now their food and refuse in proper storage lockers and dumpsters beginning Wednesday, according to a decision by the U.S. Forest Service. The measure is intended to stop prevent human-bear conflict.

The Forest Order requires the use of facility provided dumpsters and food lockers locked to animal entry at the specified recreation sites. Visitors who elect not to comply with the Forest Order may be subject to a violation notice.

Candidates for Assembly District 40 united against margins tax

All three candidates for Carson City’s Assembly District 40 turned out for the League of Women Voters forum Monday night.

The final forum sponsored by the League of Women Voters of Northern Nevada, Sierra Nevada Forums, American Association of University Women and partnership Carson City will be held tonight, Tuesday, at 6 p.m. in the Sierra Room of the Carson City Community Center. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the public is invited.

The forum features candidates for Lieutenant Governor and Attorney General. Candidates for Lieutenant Governor include Lucy Flores, Mark Hutchison, and Mike Little. Invited candidates for Attorney General include Adam Laxalt, Ross Miller and Jonathan Hansen.

Fat Biking at Washoe Lake State Park

I’ve had the Fat Bike bug ever since we tested the Salsa Mukluks in Sand Canyon last year. I finally broke down and added a Surly Pugsley to my collection, a fat bike with low pressure, 4″ wide tires. I spent about a week riding my usual trails, but then decided it was time to get the bike out in a place that the bike was really designed for. With its beaches and dunes, I thought Washoe Lake State Park might be fun to try after a weekend of rain.

Column: Farm house was not shown it was a rental or held for future gain

The Eighth Circuit Court of Appeals affirmed the Tax Court’s decision that a couple did not show they held the farmhouse as a rental or for the production of income (sale at a gain later). They did rent out the farm land. But the Courts distinguished the land rental from the farmhouse.
