Monthly swing dance party

High Sierra Swing Dance Club’s monthly dance party will be the Silver Dollar Car Classic Sock Hop, 6-10 pm July 26 at the Carson Nugget’s Grand Ballroom, 507 N. Carson St. Vintage 1950s-‘60s dance music will be played, and costumes of that era are encouraged. The fun includes dance, hula hoop, costume and limbo contests and door prizes. Cost is $5 for car show participants, $7 for members of HSSDC and Reno’s Biggest Little Swing Dance Club, $10 general for individuals and $15 for couples.

ESL 10th Year Award Ceremony

June 28, 2014 was a gala day for many of our most disadvantaged families, as 42 adults from the ESL in-home Program of Northern Nevada, a no-cost-to-student program, were presented with certificates of achievement in English language and literacy. The program also tutors GED preparation and Citizenship Study at no cost.

To celebrate Nevada’s 150th anniversary of statehood, the Nevada State Museum in Carson City is exhibiting “Finding Fremont: Pathfinder of the West,” and hosting the John C. Fremont Symposium. The two-day series of lectures and presentations July 25-26 will examine how the famed explorer changed the face of America, the tools he used and the topographical and political lessons learned along the way.

Barbecue Ribs and Christianity On A Lazy Summer Day

It started out as one of those lazy days in Carson City, where it’s not too hot, but it’s not too cold!

It’s just right!

But, when the mercury begins to creep into the triple digits, I am glad I take advantage of the cooler temperatures early in the summer season, because I hate to cook on my patio when it is 100 degrees in the shade!

This is the reason I go straight to my favorite BBQ restaurant for my semi-annual feasting of pork ribs, with corn bread, cole slaw and beans, coupled with my favorite adult libation.

Soaring heat brings motorcycles, bicycles to streets and the risk for crashes

It is going to get hot this coming week in Carson City and Northern Nevada. With the weather we can expect to see more bicycle, moped, and motorcycle riders out and about on roads and highways trying to keep cool in the summer heat.

In addition we will also see an increase in pedestrians as school is out and many children are on foot as they travel to locations within the city.

Weather Service: Western Nevada temperatures to soar above 100 early next week

Enjoy the light winds and upper 80s and low 90s temperatures this weekend because after Sunday it is going to get triple-digit hot in some areas around western Nevada, according to the National Weather Service.

Snyder Avenue overpass opens in Carson City

A major construction project is now open to traffic, with the completion of the Snyder Avenue Overpass, on the south end of Carson City. The bridge is part of the Carson City Freeway project and will give residents access to their neighborhoods and make way for the final stretch of Interstate 580.
