Free movie tickets offered to donors at Carson City Sheriff's Office blood drive

Give some blood, get a free movie ticket. That's just one of the incentives to draw residents to the Carson City Courthouse parking lot, today, Wednesday for a blood drive. The other incentive is that giving blood saves lives.

The United Blood Services drive inside the Blood Mobile runs from 8 a.m. to noon at the courthouse parking lot, 885 East Musser Street next to the sheriff's office. The drive is being hosted by the Carson City Sheriff's Office. To schedule an appointment call Marie at (775) 283-7895. All donors will receive one free movie ticket at Galaxy Fandango.

Carson City firefighters assist with Rim Fire, more than 20 major events this year

An active wildfire season has sent Carson City Fire Department personnel on more than 20 assignments this year, including the Rim Fire burning near Yosemite National Park.

On Saturday Carson City Fire Department Capt. Matt Donnelly was assigned as a strike team leader with other area engines to the fire, which has chewed nearly 180,000 acres in the Stanislaus National Forest in Tuolumne County. Thick smoke from the Rim Fire continues to push through Carson City, Carson Valley, Lyon County and much of Northern Nevada.

Pizza Factory on Highway 50 is doing something totally awesome for Eagle Valley Middle School

The owners of the Pizza Factory on Highway 50 East in Carson City are generously donating 20 percent of the entire day's earnings on Sept. 10 to the Eagle Valley Middle School PTO in order to help with supplying students with Scholastic Books.

The event will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 10 from 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Please come in, call in or pick up some delicious pizzas, pastas, sandwiches or wings and help raise funds for Eagle Valley Middle School students. And please thank them for always supporting our youth and their programs!

Carson City author to tell inspirational story of daughter with cerebral palsy now working for NASA

But perhaps the most memorable words he has written are those that tell the story of his amazing daughter, Katie May. Browne’s memoir, “How to Raise a Rocket Scientist,” will appear in a free lecture on Friday, Sept. 27, 10 a.m.-noon, at Western Nevada College.

Nevada extended unemployment benefits slashed due to federal budget cuts

More than 20,000 Nevadans will see a 59 percent reduction in their federal extended unemployment benefits beginning the week ending August 31 because of federal budget cuts known as sequestration, the state's Department of Employment, Training and Rehabilitation reports.

The federal sequestration cuts will only affect federal extended benefits, also known as Emergency Unemployment Compensation, which begins after a claimant has exhausted their regular unemployment benefits which typically last up to 26 weeks, according to a news release.

Lake Tahoe man in Carson City jail for alleged third-time DUI

A 34-year-old Zephyr Cove man was arrested Monday in Carson City and faces a felony third-time DUI charge.

Blake Paul Bertram was arrested at 8:15 a.m. in the 1200 block of North Carson Street. According to a Carson City sheriff's deputy report, dispatch was called regarding a man driving drunk northbound on Carson Street.

The vehicle, a white GMC Sierra, was stopped in a parking lot by an officer, while another deputy spoke with several witnesses who observed Bertram driving and allegedly throwing beer bottles out the window, the arrest report states.

Lyon County Manager: Power restored at administrative complex

UPDATE: Power has been restored to the administrative complex, said Lyon County Manager Jeff Page.

Lyon County manager Jeff Page reports a large power outage for the majority of Mason Valley. NV Energy has been notified, said Page. The cause of the outage is unknown at this time and it is unknown when the power will return.

Carson City Airport secures nearly $1.4 million in federal transportation grant

Carson City Airport has landed a federal grant of nearly $1.4 million, Nevada Sen. Harry Reid announced Tuesday.

The money is among 10 grants from the U.S. Department of Transportation for rural airports in the Silver State. Carson City Airport's share amounts to $1,387,500.
