Memorial Day boaters at Lake Tahoe reminded to clean, drain and dry

Boaters planning to launch at Lake Tahoe over Memorial Day Weekend are reminded to arrive at one of five watercraft inspection stations clean, drained and dry in order to get through the inspection process and out on the water more quickly.

All boats entering Lake Tahoe without a Lake Tahoe wire inspection seal are required to go through a mandatory inspection and purchase an inspection sticker as part of the public, private, multi-agency effort to protect Lake Tahoe from aquatic invasive species (AIS). Care Flight responds after traffic accident at Flint Drive and Highway 50

A Care Flight air ambulance was ordered following a vehicle accident at the intersection of Highway 50 and Flint Drive in Carson City.

At least three people were reported injured in the Friday afternoon accident. One person was taken by Care Flight and two others were transported by ground ambulance to Renown Medical Center in Reno.

Highway 50 near the accident scene was reduced to one lane and shut down for a time at Flint. The Nevada Highway Patrol, the Carson City Sheriff's Office and Carson City Fire Department were called to the accident scene, reported shortly after 4 p.m.

Political heat derails plan to let Legislature meet in Las Vegas

A proposal to allow the Nevada Legislature to meet in Las Vegas is being scrapped.
Sen. Tick Segerblom, D-Las Vegas, said Friday he is proposing an amendment to strip from his resolution a proposal to allow sessions of the Legislature in Southern Nevada or elsewhere in the state outside of Carson City.

Greater Nevada Announces New Consultant

Greater Nevada Mortgage (GNM) has brought on Tracy McLeod to serve as a Mortgage Consultant in Douglas County. Her diverse background encompasses more than 20 years of experience in mortgage servicing, including title, escrow and loan origination.

McLeod is an active member of the Council of Residential Specialists, the Women’s Council of Realtors and the Sierra Nevada Association of Realtors. Additionally, her efforts in the mortgage industry were recognized by the Nevada Appeal in 2008 when she was awarded Reader’s Choice for Loan Officer.

Carson City nominated for Benjamin Moore 'Main Street Matters' program

Carson City and Virginia City are two of more than 100 U.S. cities nominated by Benjamin Moore Paints for a complete repaint of downtown, officials announced Friday.

Benjamin Moore launched its “Main Street Matters” initiative May 22. In the contest, consumers around the country can cast their vote online and pick which 20 U.S. Main Streets should be revitalized.

In a news release, Carson City Planning Director Lee Plemel said the initiative is timed well with what is going on in downtown Carson City.

Food for Thought gets help from Carson Nugget to feed needy children this summer

Carson City nonprofit Food for Thought has teamed up with the Carson Nugget to make sure needy children stay fed this summer.

“We were in need of a kitchen to make lunches for children in our program and the Carson Nugget stepped right up to the plate and agreed to allow us to use their kitchen facilities,” said Stephanie Gardner, executive director, Food for Thought. “This is great because it will allow us to continue this much needed program during the summer months when school is not in session.”

Carson City Vietnam veterans to unveil special memorial in Fernley to fallen soldiers, nurses

The Vietnam Veterans of America, Carson City Area Chapter 388 invite you attend a Memorial Day Service on Monday, May 27, beginning at 11 AM at the Northern Nevada Veterans Memorial Cemetery in Fernley.

The service will be an hour long. Immediately following the service, there will be an unveiling of the Vietnam Veterans Memorial. The shrine lists the names of 151 young men from Nevada who gave their lives in Vietnam. Adjacent to that are the names of eight nurses who also gave their lives in Vietnam while they were there caring for our troops.

Carson City man jailed after officers find meth stashed in toy action figure

A 25-year-old Carson City man faces felony drug charges after a vehicle search netted, among other things, methamphetamine that was stashed inside a toy action figure.

Officers arrested Jesse Silis-Teran at 5:35 p.m. Thursday near Humboldt and Long streets. According to the arrest report, officers patrolling the area heard a group of people yelling at each other and met with three individuals at a parked car.

Nevada a Step Closer to Marriage Equality

Many people filled the Nevada Assembly chambers in Carson City on Thursday as a resolution to repeal a same-sex marriage ban in Nevada passed 27-14, bringing the state one step closer to marriage equality.

Senate Joint Resolution 13 requires that all marriages be treated equally under the law and removes gender from the definition of marriage. It also specifies that religious institutions can choose not to marry couples of the same gender.

Reno residents, Meredith Tanzer, 42, and Yevonne Allen, 28, have followed the measure closely during this session.
