Gourmand Golf Scramble signups underway; tourney to benefit Community Counseling Center

The tournament returns after a year hiatus and is sponsored by The Cracker Box, Café at Adele’s and Js’ Old Town Bistro. The tournament benefits the Community Counseling Center of Carson City. Breakfast and registration begin at 7:30 a.m. with a shotgun start at 9 a.m.
Sandy Hook parents gather in Carson City to support gun bill
Submitted by editor on Tue, 05/21/2013 - 9:04pmVictims of mass shootings — from Sandy Hook Elementary in Connecticut to the shooting that injured Congresswoman Gabrielle Giffords in Tucson, Arizona — came to Carson City on Tuesday to show support for Senate Bill 221. The bill, if approved would require criminal background checks for all gun sales in Nevada.
Bill to Block Black Bear Hunts During Course of Three-Year Study

CARSON CITY — The Assembly has passed a bill that will require a three-year suspension on black bear hunting in Nevada while the Department of Wildlife conducts a scientific study to determine if a healthy population of the animals can be sustained in the event that a sanctioned bear-hunting season is re-instituted permanently.
SB82 was originally aimed at banning bear hunting indefinitely but has since been amended several times. Only two Assembly members spoke prior to the vote during today’s Assembly Floor Session.
Cancer Drug Parity Bill Passes Assembly
Submitted by Nevada Media Alliance on Tue, 05/21/2013 - 3:24pmA bill that requires medical insurance plans with cancer coverage to pay more for oral chemotherapy medications passes the Assembly 39-0 on Tuesday.
SB266, which passed the Nevada Senate unanimously in April, would require health insurers to not charge patients more for oral chemotherapy medications (pills) than patients who are undergoing traditional IV chemotherapy. Such drugs can cost patients as much as $2,000 to $10,000 per month.

AAA Carson City awards $5,000 to Carson City fire department, sheriff's office
Submitted by editor on Tue, 05/21/2013 - 3:10pmCARSON CITY — Hundreds of people showed up last week to pay tribute to Carson City’s finest — who along with AAA’s renowned roadside assistance program — come to the rescue for local citizens every day.
AAA handed the Carson City Fire and Sheriff’s Department a $2,500 check each to pay for public education materials and the K9 unit, respectively.
“(We) will use it there (as) a way to give back,” said Tom Tarulli of the Carson City Fire Department.
In addition, Friday’s event brought out officials and the mascot for the Reno Aces. AAA sponsors the minor league baseball team.
Higher education cuts would weaken Nevada’s economic development
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Tue, 05/21/2013 - 2:55pmThe latest legislative funding proposals for Nevada’s rural community colleges will do serious harm to the economic development work now employed through a partnership between Northern Nevada Development Authority and Western Nevada College.
Saturday’s committee vote in the Nevada Legislature would result in a General Fund cut of 11.42 percent in the budget of Western Nevada College. This comes on top of more than 27 percent in reductions over the past five years, which led to a significant loss of academic programs, faculty, staff, and services.

Woman hits parked car, jailed for driving under influence of drugs
Submitted by Jeff Munson on Tue, 05/21/2013 - 1:28pmA 24-year-old Carson City woman was arrested Monday, May 20, 1:31 p.m. at the intersection of Division and Spear streets after hitting a parked car while allegedly under the influence of drugs.
Officers report the woman slurred her speech and had trouble balancing when they interviewed her about the accident. According to the arrest report, the woman told officers she was diabetic. Fire personnel on scene reported her blood sugar was slightly elevated but not to where it would cause a problem, the report states.
