Smaller classes not at top of Sandoval's education agenda

Gov. Brian Sandoval has said his administration has two top priorities: education and economic development.

When it comes to education, Sandoval has used both the bully pulpit of his office and his budget to call for school choice, ending social promotion, expanding full-day kindergarten and improving funding for programs targeting English-language learners.

More than 300 take the Polar Plunge at Lake Tahoe

Some brave souls jumped into the frigid waters of Lake Tahoe Saturday afternoon for the South Lake Tahoe Polar Plunge.
The event is held every year at Zephyr Cove Marina as a fundraiser for Special Olympics Northern Nevada and California.

Glass Slippers return in Youth Theatre Carson City’s Cinderella

Youth Theatre Carson City is excited to announce our upcoming production of Rodgers & Hammerstein’s Cinderella, America’s favorite adaptation of the classic tale, to be held April 5-7 in the Bob Boldrick Theatre at the Carson City Community Center.

The cast is comprised of over 75 local youth ages five to eighteen, who play all the classic characters including Cinderella, her Prince Charming, The Wicked Stepmother and Stepsisters, the magical Fairy Godmother, and a host of other colorful characters who bring Rodger’s and Hammerstein’s masterwork to life!

High Sierra Swing Dance Club invites the public to its sixth-annual anniversary Spring Ball dinner-dance and “Local Celebrities Who Think They Can Dance” contest on April 27 at the Carson Nugget, 507 N. Carson St. No-host cocktails at 6 p.m., celebrity dancers’ contest at 6:30, buffet dinner at 7, dancing to a variety of DJ music throughout the evening. Requested attire is formal or semi-formal. Cost is $30.

Deer Run group adopts Carson City wild horses removed from BLM

A herd of wild horses removed from an area off of Deer Run Road last month were purchased Saturday at a Bureau of Land Management adoption in Carson City.

The BLM-sanctioned silent bid adoption was held at Silver Saddle Ranch. The horses were bought for $850 by the Deer Run Preservation Group in a collaborative effort with the American Wildhorse Preservation Campaign.

About 100 people attended the auction, many of whom were supporting the group and its efforts to save the horses.

Because of continued construction of the Carson City Freeway project, Snyder Avenue is closed between E. Roland Street and Center Drive. Center Drive and Silver Sage Drive are also closed south of Appion Way. Bennett Avenue is closed between Center Drive and Bigelow Drive. Detours will be marked.

On Arizona marijuana tour, Nevada legislators see value of quality control at dispensary level

There may be very few times that six elected officials surround themselves with pounds of marijuana and invite in photographers, television stations and newspaper reporters.
But the cameras were rolling as six Nevada state legislators huddled Friday around a lit display case at Arizona Organix.

Marriage definition could be removed from Nevada Constitution

CARSON CITY — Sixteen legislators have signed on to joint resolution that would remove wording in the state constitution that defines marriage as between a man and woman.
Voters decided to define marriage in the Nevada Constitution as between a man and woman. The amendment required two votes, with the last taking place roughly eleven years ago.
