Ways to beat the summer heat wave in Carson City

With the end of the heat wave nowhere in sight, people are beginning to get a little stir crazy stuck inside lying in front of the air-conditioning all day. Luckily, Carson City and the surrounding areas offer many options to keep cool while we wait for high temperatures to come down some.

The Carson City Aquatic Facility is open seven days a week until August 12, when it will close for Sundays again.

There are many options for all ages, including lap swimming, open swim times, therapy pools, and a “Parent and Tot” pool for little swimmers.

For children ages 0-3, swimming is free.

Adult drop in rates are merely $4, for Senior (55+) it is $3, and for children ages 4-17 it is $3 as well. Discounts are given when purchasing punch cards.

They also offer many classes for all ages, as well as fun events such as “Dive-In” movies and “Grown Ups and Guppies” activities.

The Carson Aquatic Facility is located at 841 North Roop Street in Carson City. Please call 887-2242 for more information.

— Alongside the Carson River are numerous spots to splash around and cool down, including the 40-acre Carson River Park located on Carson River Road, which recently underwent a new paving process with additional parking areas for visitors who may not feel comfortable taking their vehicles off roading.

The area is a popular spot for hiking, horseback riding, picnicking and fishing, including a disabled-accessible fishing pier, as large cottonwoods line the banks of the river, providing ample shade.

There are also several areas for kids and adults alike to splash around or swim, dependent on water levels of the river at the time.

The River Park is located 5013 Carson River Road, along the Carson River in eastern Carson City on the south side of Carson River Road across from Lloyd's Bridge and Pinion Hills Drive.

For a list of amenities and prohibited activities for the Carson River Park, view their website here.

— The newest favorite addition to the downtown for children is the McFadden plaza splash pad, conveniently located across from Scoups Soup and Ice Cream shop. Tonight, July 27, there will be Live Music in the Plaza as well featuring the Trippin King Snakes.
