Douglas County declares state of emergency due Tamarack Fire

Minden - The Douglas County Board of Commissioners has declared a State of Emergency as a precautionary action due to the Tamarack Fire burning in parts of Alpine County, California, Lyon County, Nevada and Douglas County, Nevada. The declaration will be submitted to the State of Nevada and will allow regional partners to speed up the delivery of resources required to respond more effectively to the emergency and meet the needs of the community.

Many Federal, State, and Local government agencies including East Fork Fire, Douglas County, and the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office as well as organizations and businesses are cooperating to respond to the fire. Evacuations have occurred in Douglas, Lyon and Alpine Counties, and other communities in Douglas County have been warned about potential evacuations.

The Tamarack Fire crossed the state line a short distance into Douglas County, Nevada on July 21, 2021. On July 22, 2021 it was reported that a spot fire from the Tamarack Fire had crossed U.S. Hwy 395. The fire is approximately 58,000 acres and is 4% contained as of July 23, 2021. Over 1,300 personnel are working on the fire.

Douglas County provided the primary locations for shelter evacuations at the Douglas County Community and Senior Center, Topaz Ranch Estates (TRE) Community Center. On July 21, 2021 Lyon County opened its doors to Smith Valley High School, taking in Douglas County residents when the TRE Community Center was closed due to potential fire danger.

The Type 2 Great Basin Incident Management Team #3 assumed command of the fire on Sunday, July 18 at 6 a.m. The Rocky Mountain Type 1 Incident Management Team transitioned with the Great Basin Team and took command of the fire at 6 a.m. on Tuesday, July 20.

Douglas County is asking residents to stay vigilant, pay attention to emergency phone alerts, and have a plan in place for evacuations. In addition, plan for power outages and road closures. Have a transportation plan for animals and livestock. Think about fuel, medications, documents, keepsakes, and groceries needed. Think about loved ones on oxygen or anyone who may need assistance leaving their home.

Should evacuations occur, residents will receive an emergency alert notification their phone. Residents who do not have a cell phone or landline, please keep in contact with friends, neighbors and family.

The Caldor Fire in El Dorado County southwest of Lake Tahoe has now burned 156,515 acres and remains 19 contained as of Sunday morning.

The Nevada Department of Public Safety (DPS) Highway Patrol Division is furthering its mission to promote safety on Nevada’s highways with the launch of a new, statewide anti-human trafficking campaign across multiple platforms now through October 10.

Truckers Against Trafficking (TAT), the Nevada Trucking Association (NTA) and the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) have combined efforts with the Nevada Department of Public Safety Highway Patrol Division to educate commercial vehicle drivers on identifying the signs of human trafficking while positioning State Troopers as a resource to help human trafficking victims.

​As Nevada Department of Wildlife (NDOW) Game Warden Sean Flynn arrived on the scene of a capsized boat on Lake Mead on Mother’s Day of last year, he saw fellow game wardens Thomas Hamblin and Casey Humphries near the shoreline with the capsized boat that was now partially submerged. Hamblin and Humphries, the first to arrive on the scene, had just pulled multiple people from the water and were now coordinating with other wardens and National Park Service Rangers to search for a missing 3-year-old girl who was believed to be stuck under the boat. It was dusk and the boat was sinking. Time was running out.

A 41-year-old Carson City man was arrested Thursday morning on felony assault with a deadly weapon and brandishing after allegedly chasing his co-worker with a firearm following a physical altercation.

On Thursday morning, Kevin James Rice was arrested after deputies were dispatched to the 3300 block of Executive Point Way in reference to a welfare check.

At the upcoming Board of Supervisors meeting, which will be held on Thursday, Sept. 2, a discussion will be held on whether or not to make “indecent conduct” or having an open container of alcohol in public misdemeanor crimes in Carson City.

The meeting will begin at 8:30 a.m. in the Robert ‘Bob’ Crowell Board Room of the Community Center.

UPDATE: The following is a news release from the Douglas County Sheriff's Office: On Thursday at approximately 2:44 p.m. the Douglas County Sheriff’s Office received a request for assistance from the California Highway Patrol who was in pursuit of a white Cadillac from the area of Meyers, Calif. The Cadillac drove past a license plate reader and it identified the vehicle associated with a subject wanted for homicide.

An evacuation warning was issued for Christmas Valley near Meyers in the Lake Tahoe Basin, and parts of Alpine County, including the Kirkwood community, according to Cal Fire in a news release late Thursday morning.

Carson City Fire Department responded Thursday afternoon to a small brush fire near the Mountain Street trailhead, in the area of 1300 Mountain Street near Fleischmann Way and West Long Street.

The fire was called into dispatch at 1:42 p.m. First responders on scene reported a small, 5-foot by 5-foot smoldering fire in the brush, possibly a warming fire. A battalion chief on scene reported the fire was extinguished at 1:51 p.m.

Casinos and gaming establishments in Carson City and Carson Valley saw gaming revenue increase 25.90 percent in July compared to July 2020, according to figures released Thursday by the Nevada Gaming Control Board.

Fremont Elementary School has confirmed four cases of COVID-19 requiring approximately 20 percent of the student population to quarantine. Out of an abundance of caution, the Carson City School District will close the school to all students Thursday and Friday, August 26 and 27, for thorough cleaning and sanitizing per the Centers for Disease Control guidelines.
