Cab Calloway Orchestra, Feast of Chocolate, Artsy Fartsy jewelry show and more: Carson City region readies for weekend

Heading into the weekend, there’s a bevy of events around the Carson City region over the next three days. Dozens of sweets are in store for Saturday. The American Association of University Women holds its 20th annual Feast of Chocolate at the Carson Plaza and Event Center. Artsy Fartsy Gallery hosts its 9th annual Jewelry and Chocolate Show with several new decorative pieces. To cap-off Saturday, the legendary Cab Calloway Orchestra makes its way to the capital city.

Friday, February 7
— Coin Press Demonstrations at the Nevada State Museum. 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. at 600 N. Carson St. Every Friday and Saturday, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. we hold historic Coin Press No. 1 demonstrations in the 150 year old Carson City Mint building. If they wish, visitors may purchase a planchet (coin blank) in the Museum Store and bring it to the Coin Press No. 1 gallery to have it minted just for them.

— Nevada Commission for Women to hold celebratory luncheon on 100 year anniversary of women's vote. 11:30 a.m. at the Nevada State Library Atrium, 100 N. Stewart St. Join the Nevada Commission for Women on Feb. 7 to honor women’s suffrage. $30 per person.

— Forest Service 'Ski with a Ranger' at Lake Tahoe's Heavenly Mountain. 1 p.m. at the top of Heavenly Gondola. The USDA Forest Service Lake Tahoe Basin Management Unit invites you to Ski with a Ranger at Heavenly Mountain Resort beginning Friday, Jan. 31, 2020. Tours begin at Tamarack Lodge, at the top of the Heavenly Gondola every Friday at 1 p.m. The tours last approximately one-hour and continue through March 27, 2020, weather permitting.

— Hour of Code at the Carson City Library. 4 to 5 p.m. at 900 N. Roop St. Do you enjoy coding? Then join us for one hour of computer programming in the maker-space each month! No prior experience needed. In today's program, learn how to code in Python by completing the Banana Tales challenge.

— Carson City Arts Initiative to present 'Impact' exhibition featuring Paula Chung. 5 to 6:30 p.m. at 885 E. Musser St. The Capital City Arts Initiative presents its exhibition "Impact" by artist Paula Chung at the CCAI Courthouse Gallery in Carson City. The Initiative will host an opening reception this Friday, 5 to 6:30 p.m. The artist will give a brief talk about her work at 5:30 p.m. The exhibition will be in the gallery from Feb. 7 through May 28, 2020.

— Cowboy Liquor Company's Pre-Valentine's Day Party. 5 to 7 p.m. at 444 E. William St. It's a Valentines Tasting Event you don't want to miss! There will be 16 wines with eight red and eight white. Come and try before you buy! Find the perfect wine for the big night and $10 keeps your Reidel Crystal glass!

— Open Mic Night at A to Zen Gift Shop. 6 to 9 p.m. at 1803 N. Carson St. Open Mic Night is held at A to Zen Gift Shop on the Zen Den Stage. All talents, creative projects are welcome. Come practice being on stage. There will be music, comedy, poetry, magic, and more. All ages and skill levels are welcome.

— Extreme Places and Colonizing Space lecture at the Jack C. Davis Observatory. 6:30 p.m. at Western Nevada College, 2699 Vanpatten Dr. in Carson City. ‘Colonizing Space,’ ‘Extreme Places’ Presentations at JCDO Accompany Mike Thomas to one-of-a-kind spots and outer space for the Northern Nevada lecturer’s opening presentations of 2020 at Jack C. Davis Observatory.

— The Grumpy Old Men Dance Band at the Carson City Senior Center. 6:30 p.m. at 911 Beverly Dr. "The Grumpy Old Men" range in. age from 60 -90, that's a lot of experience. They're old, but they don't look very grumpy. They call themselves the Grumpy Old Men and they draw a crowd everywhere they go.

— Kristopher's Winter Concert. 7 p.m. at Kristopher’s Ristorante Bar, 1599 Esmerelda Ave. in Minden. Come enjoy a great Friday night with a delicious dinner and a full selection of specialty wines.

— An Evening of Improv Comedy at the Brewery Arts Center. 7 to 8:30 p.m. at 449 W. King St. An evening of improv comedy! Join the Imaginators Syndicate for some short form and long form improv. All ages are welcome. $5 for admission.

— Achilles Wheel in concert at the CVIC Hall. 7 to 9:30 p.m. at 1602 Esmeralda Ave. in Minden. The Carson Valley Arts Council presents Achilles Wheel in concert as part of its 2019-2020 Concert Series.

— Rock N' Bowl Friday at Carson Lanes Family Fun Center. 7 to 11 p.m. at 4600 Snyder Ave. Have your own bowling party with family and friends! We turn up the tunes & turn on the party lights every Friday and Saturday. Great discount for groups of 10 or more. Comedian Ellis Rodriguez headlines The Carson Comedy Club at the Carson Nugget. Ellis has also performed in filmed showcases including Shaq’s All Star Jam, Laugh’s On FOX and Comedy Central and Kevin Hart’s, Hart of the City.

— Rebekah Chase at Living the Good Life. 8 p.m. to 12 a.m. at 1480 N. Carson St. Rebekah Chase Band returns! The local band brings us everything from 80s 90s and current hits! Let’s have some fun at Living the Good Life.

— Bill Wharton to perform at Bella Vita Bistro. Songwriter Bill Wharton will be at Bella Vita Bistro, 1304 S. Stewart St., on Friday with great live music. It’s an event you don’t want to miss out on!

Saturday, February 8
— 9th annual Jewelry and Chocolate Show at Carson City's Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery (all day). Join Artsy Fartsy Art Gallery, LLC for our 9th Annual Jewelry and Chocolate show this Saturday, Feb. 8. This year more than 8 jewelers are creating one-of-a-kind creations for you. Many, many new pieces will be on hand for you to try on and take home. The artists will be here throughout the day to meet our community and talk about their creations.

— Join congressional candidate Patricia Ackerman for coffee on Saturday. 9 to 10 a.m. at Mom and Pops Diner, 224 S. Carson St. Congressional candidate Patricia Ackerman will be at Mom & Pops Diner in Carson City. Meet, talk and have a cup of coffee with Patricia. All Nevada residents are invited to attend and bring your thoughts, ideas, and concerns to share.

— Muscle Powered hosts Saturday hike at V&T Trail. 9 to 11 a.m. Meet at the dirt parking lot opposite Murphy Dr. on Combs Canyon Parking area at trailhead. Come join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike, or ride around Carson City. Muscle Powered is a local non-profit organization that promotes walking, hiking, biking and trail building.

— Guided snowshoe hikes with a ranger on the Carson Ranger District. 10 a.m. at Tahoe Meadows, one mile southwest of the summit of Nevada State Route 431 Mt. Rose Highway. The Carson Ranger District on the Humboldt-Toiyabe National Forest is pleased to announce the return of the popular Forest Ranger-led snowshoe walks. The walks begin this Saturday, Jan. 25, and will be offered every Saturday through March 28.

— Nevada State Museum continues 150th anniversary of the Carson City Mint with weekend activities for kids. 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at 600 N. Carson St. As part of its celebration of the 150th anniversary of the Carson City Mint — Mint 150 — the museum is hosting Kids Minting Days on Saturday and Sunday, Feb. 8-9. Children 17 and younger are admitted for free and each child will receive a commemorative copper medallion memorializing the Mint’s 150th anniversary.

— Carson City's Junior Victory Roller Derby Team raising funds to head to LA. 8 to 11 p.m. at Westside Pourhouse, 110 W. Telegraph St. Our adult team is working on behalf of the kids on Saturday by hosting a 21 and older fundraiser at Westside Pourhouse. We will have Jell-O shots and merchandise for sale at their weekly karaoke from 8p-11p, so please stop by. Our first scrimmage of the season will be Sunday. You can come support the cause while watching live roller derby. Both juniors and adults will be playing in separate matches. Doors will open at 12:30 p.m.

— Carson City Fire stairclimb event to support the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. 1 p.m. at the Fox Brewpub, 310 S. Carson St. Carson City Fire Department will be hosting a fundraiser to benefit the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society on Saturday, Feb. 8, beginning 1 p.m. at The Fox Brewpub in Carson City, join your city’s firefighters in supporting a worthy cause! Donations can also be made online at carson.org/stairclimb.

— AAUW Capital Branch's 20th annual Feast of Chocolate. 1 to 3 p.m. at the Carson Plaza and Event Center, 211 E. 9th St. Advanced tickets: $20. Tickets day of event: $25. Come sample an abundance of delicious chocolate desserts prepared by the award winning Culinary Arts program from Carson High School, Red's Old 395, John Hurzel from A Catered Affair, Save Mart North and Raley's Carson City.

— Kids Cooking Classes at Sierra Chef. 1 to 3 p.m. at 2292 Main Street Suites 3 and 4 in Genoa. Kids of all ages are welcome to join in a cookies and candy making class on Saturday, Feb. 8. $55 per person, please arrive on time for class.

— Bently Heritage Estate Distillery's 1st Anniversary Party. 6 to 8 p.m. at 1601 Water St. in Minden. Please join Bently Heritage as they raise their glasses and toast to the first year, celebrating the occasion with live music and more!

— Carson City Parks, Rec and Open Space to host Full Moon Hike. 6:30 p.m. on the south end of Prison Hill. The Carson City Parks, Recreation and Open Space Department will host its February Full Moon Hike this Saturday on the South end of Prison Hill. The hike will be a glow stick adventure featuring the "Snow Moon," Ghost Rock and plenty of beautiful terrain.

— Father-Daughter Dance. 6:30 to 8 p.m. at the Douglas Community and Senior Center, 1329 Waterloo Ln. in Gardnerville. This event will be one you don’t want to miss out on. Tickets are $15 per person and can be purchased in person at the Douglas Community Center.

— The Legendary Cab Calloway Orchestra to play at the Carson City Community Center . 7 p.m. at 851 E. William St. The whole audience will be bouncing and swaying to the irresistible rhythm. Everybody singing HI-DE-HO! They’re echoing the King himself, Cab Calloway, as he thrusts his baton into the air, and in his Zoot Suit, jumps, twirls and signals to the band to begin another joyous chorus.

— Sierra Music Society presents The Fabulous 50s. 7:30 p.m. at 780 Del Monte Ln. in Reno. The concert lasts one-and-a-half hours and will feature a vast selection of music including Folk, Country, Jazz, Rock and Roll, International, as well as Love Songs and the famous Dean, Frank & Sammy (Rat Pack). There will be sheets of “Fun Facts” handed out to attendees which will enhance the performance. Plan to laugh, reminisce and be transported back in time to a different era in America as you enjoy the classics.

Sunday, February 9
— Muscle Powered to host Carson City bike ride this Sunday. 9 a.m. Meet at Fremont Elementary School, 1511 Firebox Rd, Carson City in the south parking lot, next to the Linear Ditch Trail. Come join Muscle Powered for a free, guided group walk, hike, or ride around Carson City. Muscle Powered is a local non-profit organization that promotes walking, hiking, biking and trail building.

— Sweetheart Doubles Tournament. 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Carson Lanes Family Fun Center, 4600 Snyder Ave. The fun, favorite and annual house tournament has returned! The cost is $40 per couple for three games at a nine-pin format. Enter for a chance to win cash and prizes. There will be plenty of food and drink specials too!

Additionally, water colorist, Melanie Walters and potter, Nancy Brownrigg are our Featured Artists and have their exhibits on the back wall of the Gallery. These shows run through February 14. The Gallery is located at 449 W. King Street and is open to the public from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. everyday except Monday.
