Seven headed to Vegas, Senators finish second as a team at regionals
RENO — Even though the Carson High wrestling team came up a little short of its ultimate goal at the Northern 4A Regional Wrestling Tournament, there was a measure of consolation that made Nick Schlager smile on Saturday night. The senior 135-pounder is returning to the state tournament, and the good news is that he won't be going alone like he did last year. Now, he is part of a contingent of seven Senators who have qualified for the NIAA State Championships in Las Vegas. "We have a lot more kids going to state than last year, which is nice because I was kind of lonely last year," Schlager said. "Five of our six seniors made it, and what's exciting, the Three Stooges made it. That's Ricky (Ugarte), Junior (Valladares) and me. Coach (Tyson) Thivierge called us that because we always stuck together where ever we went, and we've stuck together ever since."
