Flea from chipmunk at Fallen Leaf Lake tests positive for plague

A flea from a yellow pine chipmunk in the Lake Tahoe area has tested positive for plague according to El Dorado County health officials.

The flea was sampled from one of three rodents trapped in the Fallen Leaf Campground area during routine plague surveillance May 18, 2016.

Senator Square: Senior projects and the special effects for everyone involved

The seniors of Carson High School will deliver their Senior Project speeches on April 18. Each student must deliver an 8-12 minute speech in front of 4-5 Carson City Community members, and this is no easy task as, statistically, many fear public speaking more than death.

Sierra Nevada Forums will host a free presentation on hiking and biking trails in Carson City on Thursday at the Brewery Arts Center Black Box Theatre.

"People who like trails get to use them, and if more people come into town there's better business and tourism,” said Anne Macquarie, moderator of the forum and founding president of Muscle Power: Citizens For A Bikeable and Walkable Carson City.

What a crazy week in the Sierras! Afternoon thunderstorms for the last several days, flooding, hail, and even snow in Yosemite are definitely unusual for this time of year. The storms are expected to subside this weekend, so keep your fingers crossed for some sunshine. Break a leg to the Proscenium Players as they open Murder in an English Manor at the Brewery Arts Center. Senior Follies debuts this year’s performance, Flashback, at the Community Center.

Sierra passes opening for season

State Route 108 over Sonora Pass has opened in time for the opening of trout fishing season in the Eastern Sierra on Saturday, April 25 according to Caltrans.

Also opening is State Route 120 (west) Mono County, Tioga Pass Road, to the East Yosemite Park Entrance Gate. State Route 120 is closed beyond this point. Users can access State Route 120 for recreational activities from the junction of US 395 at Lee Vining up to the park entrance closure gate.

Jet Blue to provide service from Reno-Tahoe to New York City beginning May 28

Jet Blue Airways announced Tuesday that it would offer nonstop service between Reno-Tahoe International Airport and New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport beginning May 28, 2015. Reno-Tahoe will be the airline's 89th destination and is among a number of new JetBlue routes in the West.

As I have done for many years, my last article of the year, each year, is to present the Don Q Awards for a number of different reasons.
