Don Q Outdoors: Go high to fish before it's too late

It’s now officially Fall and it's that unique time of the year again.
This is when the days are very noticeably shorter, the weather is much crisper and Old Man Winter is lurking just around the corner, with all of his cold, frost, snow and ice.

If you were not aware of it, The Sierra Nevada Mountains got their first snow of the year this last Saturday! Winter is on its way!

So, if you would like a last try at fishing some of our higher altitude lakes before they freeze up or are closed for the 2013 season on November 15, here are some suggestions on where to go:

Windy conditions prompt Red Flag Warning for region; fall weather returns by weekend

Weather changes are headed our way with breezy conditions today followed by a cool down over the weekend, the National Weather Service reports.

A gusty weather front moving through the region has prompted the weather service to issue a Red Flag Warning today for Carson City and much of Western Nevada and along the Eastern Sierra until about 8 p.m.

With dry air moving in prior to the front's arrival and gusts from 35 to 45 mph, fire weather conditions will become critical. Humidity is expected to be between 10 to 18 percent.

Breezy conditions prompt Red Flag Warning for Carson City area

Strong afternoon winds and low humidity have prompted a Red Flag Warning by the National Weather Service for much of Northern Nevada and the Sierra.

While the wind is helping push some of the Rim Fire smoke out of Carson City, Carson Valley and Lyon County, it has also created critical fire weather conditions because of the low humidity created, according to the weather service.

Don Q Outdoors: Go high to have fun, fish and stay cool

Sigh, it’s that time of the year again.

This is my annual reminder that if you’re someone like me, summer’s sweltering heat is not much fun. I do not like summer months.

I am an outdoors person who dearly loves the cold, frost, ice and snow of winter, and I absolutely and totally wilt at this time of the year.

And, especially, right now, with our record-setting temps in triple digits.
I am miserable and grouchy during hot weather months.

To be honest, I dislike the weather anytime it gets past 80-85 degrees.

Don Q's Fishing Report for the week of July 24

ANGEL LAKE, ELKO COUNTY, NEV:
The Nevada Department of Wildlife (http://www.ndow.org) reports:
Fishing varies from day to day, with some days being good, while others being slow. Best time of day is from about 6:00 am to 10:30 am and then again after the shadows start to hit the water in late afternoon.
Best conditions seem to be with a 5 to 10 mph breeze, putting a small chop on the water.
A few fish are being taken with small dry flies, mostly yellow in color, but most of the luck is still coming with nymphs below an indicator or dry fly.

Outdoors with Don Q: Having outside fun at two nearby recreation spots

If you are looking for somewhere in this general area to having fun in the outdoors (camping, fishing, photographing, sightseeing, etc.), then look no further than two locations in nearby Plumas County in California.
I'm referring to Davis Lake and Frenchman Reservoir.

Davis Lake:
It can be reached from Carson City by taking U.S. 395 north to Reno.
Then from Reno, drive past Bordertown and the Nevada-California state line to a junction with California S.R. 70 at Hallelujah Junction.

At Hallelujah Junction, take S.R. 70 west toward Portola and Quincy.
