Saturday is Free Fishing Day in California

California has two Free Fishing Days associated with holidays this year. The first Free Fishing Day in 2011 is on July 2 (for the Fourth of July) and the second is on September 3 (for Labor Day).

Gusty winds to continue for Carson City through tonight

High winds continue to whip through Carson City this afternoon, with a gust reaching 53 mph recorded so far in the capital city, according to CarsonWeather.com.

A wind advisory continues through 11 tonight as southwest gusts of up to 70 mph are possible in wind prone areas and gusts between 35 to 55 mph for areas along Highway 395, Highway 50 and Interstate 80, according to the National Weather Service in Reno.

Outdoors with Don Q: April 30 is the Opening Day of the California fishing season

OK Gang, it’s almost time to have fun in the High Sierras once again. In just 10 days on April 30, the 2011 fishing season will open for applicable lakes, reservoirs, streams, creeks and rivers in the State of California, plus all of the applicable waters in Inyo and Mono Counties. That season will then remain open until Tuesday, Nov. 15.

If you’re new to the area, here’s some information that can be useful if you would like to try your hand at fishing on that Opening Day or Weekend:

Current water surface temperatures are at 35.5 degrees with water clarity at 7.5 feet. It has been sunny all week as forecasted. With the afternoon highs moving into mid to low 50s, and more sunshine is on the way, with the next possibility of some rain near mid week.

Windy winter weather returns to Carson City and Sierra

Unseasonably warm days and clear night skies will come to an end this week as a low pressure system from the Gulf of Alaska moves into the Carson City and Sierra region beginning Monday bringing wind, rain and snow through the week.

The trough will bring an end to the mild weather with much colder temperatures and strong gusty winds, according to the National Weather Service in Reno and Carsonweather.com.

BLACK ROCK CITY, Nev. — At about 9:45 Saturday night, the crowd was all expectation as fireworks began blazing around the base of the Burning Man figure, 40 feet tall, looming against the black sky over the Black Rock Playa and Black Rock City eight miles from Gerlach, Nev.

Carson City Public Works tech Jason Moore puts loose limbs into a wood chipper this morning on King Street. High winds overnight and early this morning of nearly 50 mph on the west side of town to more than 70 mph just outside the city limits blew lots of dead and dying tree limbs and debris to the ground, public works reported.

Carson City Sheriff's Office reports some calls were made to the department regarding downed trees. One large tree limb smashed into a fence and blocked part of the road at Ash Canyon and Ormsby. Public Works removed the debris earlier this morning.

Miscues sink Senators in loss against Galena

To look at the box score, one inning was decisive for the Carson High softball team in its 8-3 loss at home against Galena on Thursday.
Galena did score five runs in the sixth inning -- three of which came on one hit that resulted in two errors -- to erase a 3-2 deficit en route to the Sierra League victory on a cold and windy afternoon. When reviewing the game, however, Carson coach Scott Vickrey didn't place the blame on just one play or one inning.

Old Man Winter is at the door….kicks it in late Wednesday

A strong winter storm is making its way south out of Alaska, and will arrive in Northern Nevada Wednesday and into Thursday.
